Known for his classic YouTube persona, the Angry Video Game Nerd (James Rolfe), has revealed that he’s developing a retro-style NES game of his own.
Back in 2006, I, a gaming enthusiast, embarked on my YouTube adventure, kick-starting my long-running AVGN series – a venture that actually came before the video platform itself!
In simpler terms, the “Rolfe’s Rants” segments often involve Rolfe critically analyzing classic video games from past times, with some well-known celebrities like Macaulay Culkin making appearances as guests.
His achievement granted him the chance to appear in Godzilla versus Kong, but eventually, he opted not to take it up.
Despite appearing in several video games, Rolfe’s character has never imagined being featured on an actual NES cartridge. However, this dream is now becoming a reality for him.
Angry Video Game Nerd goes back to the past with his own NES game
On January 22, Rolfe posted a tweet on his Cinemassacre account revealing a new AVGN video game.
As a child, I would have never thought that one day I’d find myself in a genuine Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game, stored on a physical cartridge. He mentioned that you can enjoy playing it not only on the original NES console but also on more contemporary systems.
As a child, I could hardly envision myself being part of an authentic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game, housed within a genuine cartridge. Now, you can relive the experience by playing it either on your original NES or contemporary gaming systems. Add it to your wishlist on Steam today! @Retroware

On his YouTube channel, Rolfe presented the game by creating a brief “AVGN-style” segment. He inserted the cartridge into his Nintendo system.
He excitedly declared that it’s not merely reminiscent of an 8-bit game; it is, in fact, an authentic 8-bit game designed to run on Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) hardware,” he said, expressing his nostalgic feeling.
The video clip features nods towards Castlevania, the video game Cybermorph on Atari Jaguar, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, as well as iconic episodes from the Angry Video Game Nerd series.
Not only does the sneak peek showcase NES gameplay, but the AVGN 8-Bit game is also set to launch on various platforms like Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles. When it comes to the physical editions, which encompass the NES cartridge, Limited Run Games will be responsible for their distribution.
To date, there’s no specified launch date yet, but since the game eventually comes out, you can expect Rolfe to share his thoughts on it much like how he previously discussed other AVGN games.
It’s not just Rolfe who has shown up in games; even YouTube stars like Jake Paul, previously an influencer and then a boxer, have made appearances. In the year 2024, he was introduced as Downloadable Content (DLC) in the game Undisputed.
