YouTube is apparently punishing ad-blockers by hiding comment section

People using YouTube have noticed that comments aren’t loading when they have ad blockers turned on. Some YouTube Premium members are even experiencing this issue.

YouTube recently updated its platform, and some of those changes caused problems for users. For example, custom subtitles – frequently used by VTubers in their music videos – were temporarily taken down.

Additionally, starting February 16th, some YouTube users have reported problems seeing comments on videos. Several users, including those on Reddit with usernames ZBLongladder and stev1234567890, believe this issue is related to using ad blockers.

After some confusion, stev1234567890 clarified that they briefly disabled and then re-enabled their ad blocker.

YouTube Premium subs claim they’re blocked from comments

But users with YouTube Premium are experiencing the same issue. It appears as if comments have been manually turned off by the video creators, with the comments section displaying a message to that effect.

One person shared that they experience the same issue, but have to refresh the page for things to work. Another commenter explained this is why they often see comments turned off on videos – it all makes sense now.

TopMob tested this issue with YouTube Premium and didn’t encounter the issue, however.

The issue isn’t affecting everyone

While there have been numerous complaints from users, it doesn’t appear to be affecting everyone.

I’ve been reading about this, and another Redditor tested it and said it seems to be about A/B testing or regional differences on YouTube. They found that using Firefox Focus plus Ublock Origin completely fixed the issues they were having – videos load super fast, no annoying pop-ups, comments aren’t blocked, and it’s just a normal YouTube experience, but without the ads!

“That’s the problem. AB testing. Some users get horrible changes, others don’t,” another answered.

Many users on Reddit and other social media platforms have been discussing this issue, as Android Authority noted, but YouTube hasn’t officially responded yet.

After custom subtitles stopped working, the platform’s support team said it was a short-term problem caused by issues with video playback.
