As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia combined with excitement at Google’s latest move. Remembering the days of local multiplayer gaming sessions with friends, I recall the laughter, the camaraderie, and the occasional friendly rivalry that those moments brought.
Previously, the titles of YouTube Playables were limited to single-player experiences. However, Google has announced that they are experimenting with multiplayer features for their collection of free games, accessible either through the YouTube website or the YouTube app.
Initially, YouTube is experimenting with real-time multiplayer integration in two of its titles: Ludo Club and Magic Tile 3. Ludo Club bears a resemblance to the classic board game Sorry and can accommodate up to four players from different parts of the globe. Interaction includes basic chat functions like sending an angry emoji or greeting someone with “Hello.” This feature is compatible with browsers and mobile devices, and Google hints at additional features for Ludo Club in the future.
A year has passed since YouTube initially made Playables available to certain users in September 2023. More recently, YouTube officially launched their library of Playables games, featuring over 75 options for people to enjoy without any need for downloading. Some popular titles include Angry Birds Showdown, Cut the Rope, and Gin Rummy. Your progress will be automatically saved, allowing you to resume a game from where you last left off whenever you return.
It’s clear that Google hasn’t just dabbled in the gaming world; they’ve had a history in it. In early 2023, Google Stadia, their cloud-gaming service, was officially closed down following an ambitious attempt. Prior to this, Google had previously discontinued game studios they had started or acquired to support Stadia.
