“You’re in a hell of a lot of trouble.” Clint Eastwood was fired by the movie studio on the same day as Burt Reynolds, for a crazy reason

At the start of their careers, neither Clint Eastwood nor Burt Reynolds were yet famous western stars known for their unique, slow speech. Instead, they were aspiring actors who faced numerous challenges before finding their footing in the film industry.

At one point, both Eastwood and Reynolds were employed by Universal Pictures. However, they weren’t yet well-known, and it seemed their luck wasn’t turning either. In essence, they were let go by the studio on the same day. The circumstances surrounding their dismissal were peculiar, particularly in the case of Eastwood.

In a conversation with Conan O’Brien, Burt Reynolds shared a story from the start of his career, one that mirrored Clint Eastwood’s experience, but for an entirely distinct cause.

Clint, they essentially communicated that “Your speech pace is too leisurely, a tooth of yours is damaged and you’re unwilling to get it fixed, and you seem unresponsive to others, preferring your own methods.” To which I responded, “Why then, are you terminating my employment?” They countered by saying, “You lack acting skills.

Regardless of the unusual circumstances that led to his dismissal, Reynolds didn’t shy away from poking fun at the situation he and Eastwood found themselves in. Upon their return after being let go by Universal Pictures, Reynolds jokingly commented that Eastwood had a greater predicament than him.

After our walk, I remarked, “You’ve landed yourself in quite a predicament,” to which he asked, “Why?” I responded, “Because, you see, I can fake many things, but you’ll always have that distinctive feature – your Adam’s apple.

Despite Universal Pictures’ initial doubts, the two actors persisted in their careers and eventually achieved success. Their previous experience didn’t deter them from pursuing opportunities within the industry, and it ultimately proved beneficial for them.

Beyond simply having a shared unfortunate day, Eastwood and Reynolds have a common link through their shared role in the 1984 crime comedy “City Heat.” This film follows a laid-back ex-detective who navigates dangerous gangs, often finding himself in trouble. Aiding him is an old friend, this time in the form of a police lieutenant.
