The Outer Worlds 2 will be available in early access soon, and it’s taking a different approach than many action-RPG games. Obsidian Entertainment has confirmed that while you can’t have romantic relationships with the six companion characters, they can betray you if you push them far enough.
In a recent interview with Xbox Expansion Pass (reported by GamesRadar), the game’s directors, Matt Singh and Brandon Adler, explained that player choices can have negative consequences, potentially causing companions to turn hostile – even attacking or trying to kill the player, depending on the situation.
Singh emphasized the importance of making the characters feel like individuals with their own desires and reasons for acting. Players can earn their loyalty and have them fight by their side, but pushing against a character’s goals will lead to consequences, potentially ranging from arguments to outright conflict, abandonment, or even deadly battles. However, those who invest in building strong relationships will find these characters steadfast allies in the end.
For instance, the character Inez belongs to the Auntie’s Choice group. If players don’t fulfill her request to spare her allies, she’ll not only abandon them, but will actively try to fight them at different times.
Adler explained that these relationship changes won’t happen suddenly. Companion characters will give players warnings – like requests or ultimatums – when relationships start to sour. Players can then choose to work on fixing those relationships, or face the consequences of letting them fall apart.
Obsidian is giving away a cute Moon Man plushie, nicknamed a “Couch-Panion,” as the top prize in a contest that ends on November 16th. If you’d rather not enter the contest, you can still get limited-edition Outer Worlds 2 Xbox controllers, but be warned – they cost more than the $70 price of the game itself.
The Outer Worlds 2 is launching on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on October 29th. It will be immediately available to play for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Players who pre-order or purchase early access will be able to start playing on October 24th.
