Warning: major spoilers for Young Sherlock season 1.
Prime Video’s Young Sherlock tells the story of a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) tackling his initial investigation, filled with unexpected surprises. Inspired by the novels of Andrew Lane, the series depicts the famous detective after his release from prison, sent to Oxford by his brother, Mycroft (Max Irons).
Sherlock isn’t a student at the school; he works there, helping teachers and keeping things clean. Despite this, his intelligence still shines through. He meets James Moriarty and Princess Shou’an, forming a quick connection with both of them and demonstrating his sharp mind. When a teacher is murdered in Oxford, Sherlock is falsely accused and becomes the main suspect.
James and Sherlock work together to prove Sherlock’s innocence and solve the teacher’s murder. Their investigation leads them to learn more about Shou’an, a surprising revelation about Holmes’ family history, and hidden truths about Sherlock’s father, Silas (played by Joseph Fiennes).
Shou’an’s Plan In Young Sherlock Explained
Shou’an comes to Oxford carrying valuable documents belonging to Chinese royal family members. The story of Young Sherlock starts when these documents are stolen from the university library, and Sherlock is wrongly accused. He and his friend James had been in the library the night before, after sneaking into a party.
Recognizing Sherlock’s intelligence, Shou’an lets him and James investigate, not realizing they’ll discover her whole scheme. The documents weren’t actually stolen; Shou’an had hidden them in the library as a diversion. Her real plan was to detonate a bomb hidden in the library walls, killing everyone in the next room.
The dedication ceremony for the new building honoring Professor Bucephalus Hodge (Colin Firth) is taking place, and all of Oxford’s faculty are in attendance. Sherlock and James learn of this just in time to prevent a disaster, but Shou’an still manages to carry out her scheme, murdering Professor Thompson and making it look like Sherlock is responsible.
Sherlock and James, having escaped from prison with Jame’s assistance, discovered that Shou’an was after a group of professors – Thompson, Malik, Roberts, and Enright. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t save Roberts and Enright. They also learned the truth about Shou’an: she wasn’t the real princess, but an imposter involved in the kidnapping of the actual princess while she was traveling to Oxford.
The woman posing as Shou’an grew up in a small village in Gansu, China. She returns home to a terrible discovery: everyone she knows, including her parents, has been murdered. A man named Esad Kasgarli, from Constantinople, finds her and offers her a chance for revenge. He reveals that a man named Malik killed her family after discovering a valuable mineral on their land, which he then weaponized.
The British government funded the development of this weapon – though Mycroft was unaware of this secret operation – and Hodge oversaw the project. Later, Hodge was betrayed by Malik, who sold the weapon. Thompson (a math teacher), Roberts (an engineering teacher), and Enright (a meteorologist) also contributed to its development.
I was totally floored when Esad suddenly told Shou’an they weren’t going after Malik anymore, and that she could stand down. It hit her – and me! – that Esad had been manipulating her the whole time. Then, Shou’an, Sherlock, and James figured out the real twist: Esad and Malik weren’t enemies at all, they were partners. And get this – there was a third player involved, someone really significant: Silas Holmes! It was a huge reveal, and completely changed how I saw everything.
Finally, Shou’an gets her revenge on Malik and, with assistance from others, demolishes their hidden laboratory. The story of Young Sherlock concludes with Shou’an returning home to her village, where she’s happily surprised to find her sister recovered and healthy after being seriously hurt by Esad during their previous encounter.
Silas Holmes’ Experiments & Plan In Young Sherlock Explained
Okay, so the family dynamics in Young Sherlock are far more complicated than I initially expected. Sherlock and Mycroft’s dad, Silas, is a genius, but he’s been largely checked out since the tragic loss of their little sister, Beatrice. Their mother, Cordelia, played wonderfully by Natascha McElhone, has been battling mental illness for years, understandably, given the circumstances. But here’s the kicker: the film cleverly reveals Silas is deeply connected to the villain’s weapon, and even to what really happened to Beatrice, and that connection is key to understanding Cordelia’s struggles. It’s a genuinely surprising twist that reframes everything you thought you knew about the Holmes family.
Cordelia tells Sherlock and Mycroft about a man with a distinctive cane featuring a bird claw. They later discover this man is named Malik. Cordelia was also right to suspect she was being listened to – a hidden recording device behind the wall was capturing all of her conversations and storing them elsewhere.
Silas is the one responsible for everything. He faked Beatrice’s death to emotionally destroy Cordelia and have her committed to a mental institution. He then paid for her to be constantly drugged, making it appear she had a mental illness. His goal was to gain control of Cordelia’s pre-marital wealth.
Before Beatrice supposedly died, Silas was struggling financially. However, he was able to recover his finances thanks to the trust fund left by Cordelia’s father for Sherlock and Mycroft. He then purchased a chemical weapon from Malik – the same weapon that Hodge referenced during his confrontation with Malik – and, with the assistance of Esad and Malik, Silas plotted to sell it to France.
This dangerous chemical was designed for use in war, as a way to kill many people without using guns. Silas, working with other professors, intended to build a rocket to distribute the chemical widely. Although Shou’an destroyed Silas’s lab, his plans may not be completely finished.
Is Silas Holmes Really Dead At The End Of Young Sherlock?
For years, Silas habitually lied to his family, and he continued to do so even as he faced his final moments. Now, with everyone – including Beatrice (Holly Cattle) – against him, Silas attempts one last deception. Cornered on a cliff, Shou’an and Beatrice are prepared to end his life, but Sherlock insists Silas should be brought to justice and held accountable for his actions.
Silas and Sherlock struggle, and during the fight, Silas releases his grip on Sherlock and falls off a cliff. This echoes the iconic battle between Sherlock and Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, where both seemingly plunged to their deaths. Since Sherlock actually survived and Moriarty didn’t, Silas might be faking his death to deceive his family.
What Really Happened To Sherlock’s Sister Beatrice
Okay, so here’s the deal: Silas totally tricked Cordelia, Mycroft, and Sherlock into thinking Beatrice had died twelve years ago – he claimed she just wandered off into the woods. It really messed Sherlock up, because he blamed himself. But get this – it was all a fake! Silas orchestrated the whole thing to get his hands on Cordelia’s fortune, and he had the groundskeeper helping him pull it off. It’s a classic con, honestly, but a pretty cruel one, especially considering how it affected Sherlock.
Silas instructed young Beatrice to enter the woods, where the groundskeeper abducted her. He then presented the body of a different girl, falsely claiming it was Beatrice. In reality, Beatrice was secretly taken to live with a couple who couldn’t have children, and they raised her as their own. Silas continued to support her from a distance, sending a framed butterfly each year on her birthday.
Beatrice harbored hidden anger and bitterness from her childhood. When she discovered Silas was the one sending her gifts, they reconnected. Silas deceived her about her family history but offered her a place to stay while also involving her in his various business ventures. Learning about Malik’s research and a government-funded project, Beatrice pretended to be Hodge’s assistant to gather intelligence.
As a movie lover, I was really invested in Beatrice’s story. Cordelia and Sherlock spent ages trying to show her that Silas had been twisting things around and controlling her for years, but it just wasn’t clicking. It wasn’t until she actually heard Silas using the exact same lines on Sherlock that he’d used on her all along that it finally hit her – she finally understood he wasn’t being genuine.
In Young Sherlock, Beatrice betrays Silas and attempts to kill him before he plunges over a cliff. Afterward, she’s independent and starts a secret romance with James.
How Young Sherlock Sets Up Moriarty’s Villainous Turn
A key element of Young Sherlock is the strong bond and teamwork between Sherlock and James. They’re both incredibly intelligent and use their combined skills to crack every case they encounter, while also learning valuable lessons from each other—like Sherlock picking up fighting skills.
Throughout the first season of Young Sherlock, Sherlock and James remain friends, but the series also begins to establish Moriarty as a villain during their time in Paris. While there, Moriarty becomes intrigued by Silas’s experiments and the chemical weapon, and he’s later disturbed by the death of a French soldier – a soldier he killed while protecting Shou’an.
On top of everything else, James claims he’s taking the weapon’s formula to prevent anyone else from copying it, and to give them time to develop a defense. This makes it seem like James might be planning to build the weapon himself and eventually betray Sherlock, who would never agree to help him.
The friendship between them would be further strained by James’s connection with Beatrice. Although she now supports her mother and brothers, Beatrice is just as intelligent as they are, but often uses her skills for selfish reasons.
What Silas’ Hidden Key Really Means
Silas’s death isn’t the final chapter of his story, and it doesn’t resolve the issues within Sherlock’s family. Before he fell from the cliff, Silas secretly handed Sherlock a handkerchief stained with blood, which Sherlock thinks is a vital clue. After discussing his ideas with Mycroft, Sherlock discovers a hidden key inside one of Silas’s books, but Mycroft urges him to drop the investigation.
Later on, we find out Sherlock held onto the key, but the story doesn’t tell us what it unlocks. It might help him uncover more of Silas’s hidden secrets – perhaps another secret laboratory or access to records of his experiments. Either way, Sherlock still has a lot to discover about his father.
What’s Next For Sherlock & Moriarty After Young Sherlock Season 1
The new season of Young Sherlock starts with Sherlock and James working together once more, but their partnership is likely to be short-lived. James has already begun to act suspiciously, and it seems he’s starting to put his plans in motion regarding the stolen equation. Season 2 could show him fully enacting those plans.
Sherlock will keep investigating the mystery of the key Silas gave him, all while working on a new case with James. Season 2 of Young Sherlock will explore the ongoing family dynamics of the Holmes family, Sherlock’s development as a detective, and reveal what James is really up to.
