You Won’t Have to Wait As Long to Watch SNL UK This Week

Fans of Saturday Night Live in the U.S. will be happy to hear they can now stream this weekend’s episode on Peacock much sooner. Previously, the show, which airs on Sky TV, wasn’t available until 9 p.m. ET on Sundays. But starting this weekend, Peacock will release new episodes at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT – eight hours earlier. Dedicated viewers were frustrated by the previous full-day wait to see the show on Peacock, and even to find out when it would be available, but it turns out Peacock had a reason for the delay.

Peacock, owned by Comcast just like Sky, didn’t overlook SNL UK before its debut. They announced they had secured U.S. streaming rights with an enthusiastic press release on March 9th, even including a quote from NBCUniversal’s Liz Jenkins calling the show a fitting addition to the SNL family. However, the same announcement revealed a catch: unlike SNL in the U.S., or live sports events, viewers wouldn’t be able to watch SNL UK live. Instead, episodes would become available the next day, with no specific time given. Even when the team at LateNighter asked for details before the show premiered, Peacock remained silent. It wasn’t until late Sunday afternoon that they finally confirmed the show would be released at 9 p.m. ET, and it launched without any problems.

Why was the UK version of Saturday Night Live not livestreamed on Peacock in the U.S.? According to an NBCUniversal source, the decision was made to avoid confusion with the American SNL. While the U.S. show was showing reruns last weekend, both shows will be producing new episodes on the same evenings soon. NBCUniversal wanted to ensure American audiences see the U.S. SNL – which streams live on Peacock – first each week. This focus on the domestic show isn’t unique to the U.S.; in the UK, viewers on Sky Comedy don’t see the American SNL until Monday morning.

The delay in announcing a specific debut time for SNL UK was due to Peacock wanting to ensure a smooth launch for this brand-new live show. They needed time to work out any potential technical issues on the U.K. side or with getting the show onto the Peacock platform. They waited until they were confident it would stream at 9 p.m. ET before announcing a time. Now that the first episode has gone well, Peacock has decided it’s safe to move the streaming time to 1 p.m. ET – excellent!
