Ahead of the return of the three Law & Order shows in the 2025 TV season, the cast celebrated the franchise’s 35th anniversary at a pre-Emmys event. Mariska Hargitay, the star of Special Victims Unit who has been with the show since its 1999 debut, was a central figure. Behind the scenes, the actors were playful, with Christopher Meloni from Organized Crime sharing a funny video of Hargitay jokingly teasing him about not having won an Emmy – unaware he was filming her at the time.
None of the *Law & Order* shows received any nominations for the 2025 Primetime Emmys. However, Mariska Hargitay, who stars in *SVU*, is the only lead actor from the franchise to have won an Emmy, receiving the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2006. That same year, Christopher Meloni, then a co-lead on *SVU*, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series but lost to Kiefer Sutherland for *24*.
The two are longtime friends, and that friendship was clear in the unfiltered video that Meloni shared from behind the scenes at the Emmys. Take a look at the second slide of his Instagram post for the clip:

It’s hard to pick just one, but my favorite moments from the video are probably Mariska Hargitay’s expression – and her reaction – when she found out Christopher Meloni secretly recorded her saying he’d never win an Emmy. His delighted comment to the camera after she exclaimed “Oh shit!” is a close second. It’s hilarious seeing this playful side of them, considering their usual on-stage personas. You can watch the Emmys with a Paramount+ subscription and *SVU* on Peacock.
During the Emmys’ *Law & Order* segment, Mariska Hargitay, Christopher Meloni, Tony Goldwyn, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Ice-T all remained professional and stuck to the script. However, backstage was a different story! Hargitay and Meloni were seen playfully walking past a display of Emmy awards. This makes me even more eager to see Meloni return as Elliot Stabler alongside Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson in the upcoming 27th season of *SVU*.
Whether Christopher Meloni will ever win an Emmy remains to be seen, but first we need to find out if *Law & Order: Organized Crime* will be renewed for a sixth season – fingers crossed! He also shared a photo of the recent *SVU* reunion, where Ice-T was all smiles.

It’s heartwarming to see these three stars genuinely happy and well-dressed, considering the dark subject matter of their show. Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay, in particular, usually portray characters dealing with very serious and disturbing crimes, as the show’s opening explains. Seeing them smile like this is a welcome change.
Fans of the *Law & Order* franchise will have plenty to watch this fall! All three shows – *Law & Order*, *Law & Order: SVU*, and *Law & Order: Organized Crime* – return to NBC on Thursday nights. Season 25 of *Law & Order* starts at 8 p.m. ET, followed by Season 27 of *SVU* at 9 p.m. ET, and Season 5 of *Organized Crime* at 10 p.m. ET (Season 5 is also available now on Peacock). Don’t miss the new episodes premiering on NBC Thursday, September 25th!
