You Mean to Tell Me Michael Cera’s Never Done a Wes Anderson Movie Until Now?

It’s surprising that Michael Cera hasn’t appeared in a Wes Anderson film until now, given their seeming connection. It almost seems unbelievable that Cera, who fits so well into the quirky world of Anderson’s films, has not been cast as a character with a thin mustache and short shorts, perhaps as a Boy Scout leader or hotel staff member! Can it be true that he wasn’t even featured in Fantastic Mr. Fox, not even as a voice for a little talking stoat wearing a tweed coat?

Instead: This spring, it’s been confirmed that Jason Cera will make his first appearance in an Anderson production, a movie titled “The Phoenician Scheme.” Co-written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, this film follows the story of Zsa-zsa Korda (portrayed by Benicio del Toro), a wealthy European man, his daughter-cum-nun Sister Liesl (Mia Threapleton), and her tutor Bjorn Lund, played by Cera. Del Toro previously gave an impressive performance in Anderson’s 2021 film “The French Dispatch“. Mia Threapleton is the daughter of Kate Winslet.

Completing the ensemble are several actors from Anderson’s troupe, both veterans and novices, such as Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Mathieu Amalric, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Richard Ayoade, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, and Benedict Cumberbatch. The Phoenician Scheme is set to hit theaters by Focus Features on May 30, 2025, bridging a divide in the universe.
