A major question heading into Season 4 of Fire Country was about the building collapse and who would survive. The recently released trailer for the upcoming 2025 season confirmed a death: Vince. Now, Max Thieriot is discussing how Bode will cope with the loss of his father, and it’s concerning.
Following the conclusion of Season 3, it became known that Stephanie Arcila, who portrays Gabriela, wouldn’t continue in a main role, and reports also indicated that Billy Burke wouldn’t return as Vince. Although Arcila’s departure was confirmed, Burke’s and Vince’s future remained uncertain for a time. We now know that his character has died, and this will significantly affect everyone at Station 42, especially Bode, as TV Insider reports Max Thieriot explained:
It’s definitely going to keep bothering him, almost trying to break him down, and that’s concerning for someone with his personality. I think what’s most worrying is how he’s dealing with it – he’s pretending everything is fine, putting on a brave face. And like he usually does, he’s bottling things up inside when what he really needs to do is express his feelings somehow.
He’s absolutely correct; Bode is incredibly skilled at keeping things separate in his mind, but that won’t help him now. As Thieriot pointed out in this interview, Bode “hasn’t experienced a loss like this” since the death of his sister, and a lot has changed in his life since then. It’s a difficult situation, and his usual coping mechanisms might not be effective. This loss is unique for him.
The actor previously expressed concern about Bode and how he might react to such a difficult situation. Now, he’s directly confronting it. On top of that, he needs to support his friends, family, and community, which could mean he doesn’t fully address his own feelings, according to the co-creator of Fire Country.
He’s struggling with the pressure of being who everyone expects him to be – the son his mother relies on, the professional the station needs, and the leader his community looks up to. But deep down, he’s still a vulnerable child who is deeply hurt and emotionally distressed.
I’m really concerned that Bode will overextend himself trying to help everyone else, ultimately leading to burnout this season. He’s incredibly selfless, and while that’s usually a good thing, it won’t benefit him in this situation. It seems like he’s going to reach his limit, something Thieriot also hinted at, explaining:
We consistently see him reaching his limit, but that’s actually what makes his story so compelling this season. It’s all about rebuilding and triumphing over adversity. It really embodies the idea that you have to experience setbacks to come back stronger – and this season is the perfect example of that for him.
Beyond facing his own setbacks, this experience will likely cause problems in his relationships with friends and coworkers, particularly with Jake. The actor shared that Bode will be quick to blame others and second-guess every choice anyone makes, meaning he’ll need to repair those connections. Healing these relationships will be a key part of his journey.
It seems like Bode can grow and recover as he overcomes his lowest point. However, as the actor pointed out, he must first reach that bottom.
I think things couldn’t get much worse, honestly. So, while there will definitely be challenges, I believe we’ll likely see more progress with Bode by the end of this series than we ever have before.

I am definitely concerned about Bode and how he’s coping with his father’s passing, but this recent comment offers some reassurance.
I believe he’s heading in the right direction if he learns to build and keep strong connections with the people he works with and considers friends. But things will get challenging soon, because Fire Country is launching its fourth season on Friday, October 17th, at 9 p.m. on CBS.
