You Can Now See Barry Keoghan’s Ringo on a Postcard

It had been a while since Barry Keoghan was seen in public, so people were surprised by his new haircut at the Crime 101 premiere on January 28th. It was a noticeably overgrown bowl cut, and fans quickly speculated it was a first look at his transformation for the role of Ringo Starr in Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles biopics. Speaking of the films, while they’re officially titled The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event, that’s a mouthful! People are jokingly suggesting names like Fab Fourtet as a more catchy alternative.

For a short time, it appeared Barry Keoghan’s unique red-carpet hairstyle would be the only preview of how he – and fellow actors Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, and Joseph Quinn – would look as their respective Beatles. However, on January 29th, Sony released a series of postcards to students at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) giving us our first glimpse of each actor in character.

Even though we haven’t heard any music or seen much footage yet, some unclear images from the upcoming films are starting to surface, despite them being over two years away from release. It’s possible Sony is subtly testing public reaction to the casting choices. Or, this might be the best we’ll get for now, and we simply have to accept it. We haven’t seen Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney or Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, so there’s still time to perfect the look. Hopefully, the students involved in the postcard hunt have fun, and the rest of us can wait at least another year before the first trailer appears.

Harris Dickinson as John Lennon

Sam Mendes clearly has a keen eye for detail – he noticed John Lennon’s small glasses, and he’s replicated that look with actor Harris Dickinson.

Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr

While his face appears puffy and overly smoothed-out, Keoghan really nailed the famous intense look Ringo Starr had when he was brainstorming ideas for a song. It’s simple to poke fun at his hairstyle without knowing the full picture, but he actually grew a surprisingly good mop of hair, so he deserves credit – especially when you compare it to the depiction of George Harrison.

Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney

Both Pauls have a visible sadness in their expressions, and even in this blurry, old photo, Mescal seems to recognize the underlying melancholy in McCartney’s reserved view of the band’s potential. But ultimately, it’s just a picture of Paul Mescal, not a photo of a rock and roll icon.

Joseph Quinn as George Harrison

Is this a Big Little Lies wig? Please: We have two years to fix this. Someone fix this.
