Several different directors helmed the Harry Potter films, including Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates. The series was a highly desirable project, offering filmmakers a near-certain path to success, and the films consistently delivered on that promise.
Alfonso Cuarón saw directing Prisoner of Azkaban as a major opportunity, especially since he wasn’t yet a household name and his most famous films were still in the future. He was surprised when Warner Bros. offered him the job, as the Harry Potter series was quite different from the kinds of projects he’d done before.
I was surprised to be offered a Harry Potter film because I hadn’t expected it at all. I talked to Guillermo del Toro shortly after, and I told him, “It’s strange they even thought of me for this role.”
Alfonso Cuarón only agreed to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban after receiving encouragement from a famous filmmaker, and it proved to be an excellent choice. Many consider his installment to be the best – or one of the best – in the entire eight-film series.
He was shocked when I told him I hadn’t read Harry Potter. I explained it just wasn’t my kind of book. He responded with a very colorful insult in Spanish, calling me an arrogant jerk.
David Heyman, who produced the Harry Potter movies, was a strong believer in director Alfonso Cuarón. He knew Cuarón had worked on different kinds of films before, and that’s exactly why he thought Cuarón could bring a fresh perspective to the series, especially as the characters grew into their teenage years.
