Yellowstone’s treatment of Jimmy is making viewers mad all over again

As a long-time Yellowstone enthusiast with a soft spot for the underdog character development, I must admit that the latest episode of Season 5 Part 2 left me feeling somewhat disheartened. After watching Jimmy grow from an inexperienced greenhorn to a reliable cowboy, it feels like a step back to see him once again portrayed as the butt of jokes and insults by Travis.

Fans are finding it hard to accept that Jimmy, who’s often been the target of harsh treatment by other characters in Yellowstone, experienced an especially tough situation in Season 5 Episode 12.

Even though Jimmy is relatively new to managing the Dutton Ranch, he has earned supporters among viewers. Many found his struggles as an outsider endearing, and watching him evolve into a dependable and self-confident cowboy has been one of Taylor Sheridan’s most successful storylines on the series.

Nevertheless, the most recent episode from Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 seems to have reversed much of the character progression, which is provoking significant criticism among viewers.

Essentially, it’s Jimmy’s encounters with Travis, a character that Sheridan has incorporated into the storyline, which are crucial. In many of their joint travels, Travis kicks off these situations by harshly teasing or bullying the younger Jimmy. (Please note: spoilers follow!)

Taylor Sheridan has removed Jimmy’s character development

Upon Jimmy’s arrival for another workday with Travis, the horse wrangler immediately criticizes him for inserting the incorrect bit into the horses’ mouths. Travis delivers this criticism in his usual blunt style, making Jimmy appear inept, even though he has accumulated a wealth of experience working at the renowned 6666 ranch.

Not long after, Travis receives a call informing him of John Dutton’s passing. He then pulls Jimmy aside to break the sad news, giving him the option for a week’s break to cope with his feelings. However, Jimmy declines and quickly resumes his duties, demonstrating his resilience by getting back on the horse.

This instance is quite pleasant, yet it’s following a sequence that has stirred some dissatisfaction among fans, as they find it unsettling to see Jimmy being made fun of yet another time.

As a devoted gamer, I’ve got to say that this season isn’t my cup of tea, primarily because they decided to revert Jimmy’s character development back to being the punchline. It was one of the finest aspects of the show, and seeing it squandered feels like a missed opportunity.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself expressing my disappointment by saying, “Indeed, it seems to undermine the entire arc of redemption.” It’s almost as if they’ve lost grasp of their own narrative’s essence.

A third commented, ‘I don’t like the way his character developed. He left us, learned to be a skilled cowboy in Texas, but then returned acting as foolishly as before. It feels like they didn’t give him a fair treatment.’

As a gamer putting my thoughts into words, I’d say: “I find Taylor’s portrayal of Jimmy on the show incredibly frustrating and far from funny. It’s all cringe-worthy, honestly. If they were going to regress his character this much, they should have written him out of the series altogether.

In the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff, 6666, we can look forward to seeing even more of Jimmy’s talents unfold. Maybe this opportunity will be the moment when he truly gains the recognition and respect from his peers that he has always sought.
