As a dedicated gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vast digital landscapes of Yellowstone and its spinoffs, I find myself deeply invested in the Dutton family saga. The intricate web of their history, the prophecies, and the mysteries surrounding John Dutton’s lineage have kept me hooked.
The foundation of Yellowstone’s narrative is deeply rooted in legacy, yet when it comes to the lineage of the Dutton family, a significant unanswered question remains.
As the final episode of Yellowstone approaches, marking the end of the contemporary storyline surrounding the Dutton Ranch, there’s one certainty amongst fans: a resolution will be reached regarding the ranch’s future. In Episode 13, Kayce subtly suggested that the only viable option is to sell the ranch (with Thomas Rainwater being the prime candidate), and negotiate a deal to partition the land.
It’s a plan already teased way back in 1883. The Yellowstone spinoff established the Dutton prophecy – a deal James Dutton made to ensure the land would return to the Native Americans after seven generations.
In essence, the main Yellowstone series has rarely mentioned this crucial detail, but the second-to-last episode subtly suggested it might be the end of the storyline. Yet, there’s an exception, stemming from a missing link in the Dutton family genealogy.
Yellowstone fans debate John Dutton’s family lineage
Among fans of Yellowstone, there’s general consensus that John Dutton’s grandson, Tate, represents the seventh generation of the Dutton family. If this holds true, he would likely be the one to continue living and managing the ranch in future generations. Depending on his decisions, this could either involve him returning the land to its original inhabitants or selling it outright.
Kayce’s strategy aims to preserve a portion of the ranch for his family, with the hope that it will be passed on to Tate. Yet, the “seventh generation” could vary, as it depends on who is revealed as John Dutton’s grandparents in the upcoming Season 2 of 1923.
In the year 1923, there were two possible sets of grandparents for him: Jack and Elizabeth, or Spencer and Alexandra. One of these pairs had a son named John Dutton II. This individual would be the father of John Dutton, portrayed by Kevin Costner.
In the prequel, we don’t know for sure which couple will carry on the Dutton lineage. If it turns out to be Jack and Elizabeth, Tate would be part of the seventh generation. But if Spencer and Alexandra are the ones who continue the legacy, then Tate would be considered the sixth generation, which could complicate or change existing theories about the family tree.
Ahead of the Yellowstone Season 5 finale, fans have been debating this piece of family history.
One Redditor stated that it hasn’t been confirmed as fact that Jack and Liz are John II’s parents, and they seem to think it’s unlikely.
In the opening scene of episode 5×01, it’s clearly mentioned that I belong to the fifth generation. My old man, a fourth-generation member, passed away at the grand age of 90. From what we gather, he didn’t leave this world before 2014. To add to that, he was a veteran who saw active duty during World War II.
“For there to have been a fourth-generation Dutton who served in WWII, fought until the age of 90, and died some time between 2014 and just before Yellowstone’s first season began, it would have to be the case that his parents were Jack and Elizabeth. Many fans seem to favor the Spencer/Alex duo over Jack/Elizabeth, which might explain why some viewers find this timeline hard to accept.
“There is no other way for John to be 5th generation and Tate 7th,” another agreed.
One user argued, “The scene said ‘In 7 generations my people will rise up and take it back from you’. That’s 7 generations from James Dutton. That’s 7 generations not yet born, so the first generation in that line would be Jack Dutton since Elsa and John existed at that time. That would mean Tate’s grandkids are the 7th generation from when the foreshadowing was spoken.”
Currently, enthusiasts must hold their excitement until the 1923 Season 2 premieres on Sunday, February 23, where they will uncover the solution to this intriguing part of the mystery.
