As a dedicated Yellowstone fan who has watched every single episode since its debut, I have to admit that I share Luke Grimes’ sentiments about Season 5 Part 2 being an “easiest season.” Not because it was devoid of tension or drama, but rather due to the absence of the undeniable charisma and screen presence of Kevin Costner as John Dutton.
Following a lengthy hiatus and an unexpected departure from the main role in Yellowstone, actor Luke Grimes has shared that the absence of Kevin Costner during Season 5 Part 2 made filming easier for him.
To date, Taylor Sheridan’s concluding episodes of Yellowstone have sparked a range of opinions. The sudden deaths and unanticipated scenes involving Travis Wheatley have been under debate, and for many dedicated fans, the seemingly lackluster start to Season 5 can be attributed to Kevin Costner’s absence.
In 2023, the main actor from the show Yellowstone chose to leave, causing the drama series to conclude prematurely. Instead of following its intended plan for many more episodes, it was left with just six to tie up an extensive plotline.
According to Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton), the departure of the main character in Season 5 Part 2 may have had a significant impact, which might not have been entirely negative. However, whether this change was successful is largely subjective based on fan opinions.
Luke Grimes calls Season 5 “easiest season” for one reason
Grimes told Esquire that it’s likely clear to all that the situation called for change. To put it candidly, having Kevin absent from the picture helped reduce some of the disagreements.
It wasn’t particularly enjoyable to be around during that period, though I’m not singling anyone out. In fact, it turned out to be the most straightforward season we’ve ever filmed.
This seems to reference earlier speculations about a dispute between Kevin Costner and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. They both refuted any ongoing tension, attributing his departure to scheduling conflicts and disagreements over compensation. Yet, Grimes’ use of “conflict” could potentially indicate a power struggle between these two prominent figures in the industry.
Because Kevin Costner chose to depart from the show, John Dutton met his untimely end on screen, victim of a merciless orchestrated assault. This tragic event ignited discussions among viewers about its execution, with Costner himself opting not to witness it.
During the interview, Grimes shared that he had chosen not to interact with fan responses beyond the time of John’s passing, preferring to exercise caution instead.
Previously, it wouldn’t have been possible due to personal reasons, he explained. However, this year, he found himself casually checking out some fan responses regarding John Dutton’s death. He was simply curious about the emotional impact it had on people since everyone had anticipated a negative response. But, he emphasized, he takes care in these situations.
As an avid fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of the final episode of Yellowstone. After wrapping up that gripping storyline, don’t miss out on the exciting new developments with upcoming spinoffs such as 6666, The Madison, and Season 2 of 1923!
