In an interview with the Sunday Times, Arquette expressed her discomfort with the word and criticized the fact that Tarantino seems to be excused for using it, calling it racist and unsettling. It’s unclear why she brought this up during a career retrospective interview, but it likely stems from the recent intense discussion surrounding the N-word, combined with her experience working on Tarantino’s film Pulp Fiction with a director known for using the term.
It was inevitable that Tarantino would respond to Arquette’s criticism of his frequent use of a certain word, and he did so with a strongly worded letter. Tarantino questioned whether the publicity Arquette received from media coverage of the disagreement was worth the perceived disrespect towards him and the film she had previously enjoyed being a part of. He also accused her of lacking “class and honor.” Vulture, among many other publications, reported on the exchange. This suggests a resolution is unlikely, especially considering Tarantino previously criticized Paul Dano.
