The new series Y: Marshals, a spin-off focusing on Kayce Dutton from Yellowstone, will premiere on CBS. Announced earlier this year, the show will shift away from the ranch storyline and explore Kayce’s past as a U.S. Marshal, introducing a new cast of characters alongside John Dutton’s son.
As a critic, I’ve been following the expanding universe of Yellowstone, and the latest news is exciting. This new spinoff picks up where season five left off, and it’s just one of several projects Paramount is developing. What really has fans buzzing – and me too, honestly – is the confirmation that we’ll be seeing more of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in their own series, The Dutton Ranch, also on Paramount+. While we’re still waiting on a release date for that one, it sounds like Kayce’s story will be continuing soon as well. It’s a good time to be a Yellowstone fan!
According to Variety, the new show Y: Marshals will debut on CBS on Sunday, March 1st at 8 PM Eastern Time. The night will start with 60 Minutes at 7 PM ET, followed by the premiere of Y: Marshals. The popular third season of Tracker will move to 9 PM, and Watson’s second season will conclude the evening at a new time of 10 PM ET.
The new series, Y: Marshals, follows Kayce Dutton as he leaves the Yellowstone Ranch to become a U.S. Marshal. The show will explore how he uses his cowboy skills and experiences to enforce justice in Montana, while also dealing with the personal and emotional challenges of the job. Logan Marshall-Green (Upgrade, Spider-Man: Homecoming) will star as Pete Calvin, a fellow military veteran and friend of Kayce’s.
Brecken Merrill, Gil Birmingham, and Mo Brings Plenty are returning to their roles in the new series, continuing their characters from Yellowstone. Merrill plays Tate Dutton, Kayce’s son, while Birmingham is Thomas Rainwater and Brings Plenty plays Mo. Joining them will be Arielle Kebbel (known from The Vampire Diaries), Tatanka Means (Ransom Canyon), Ash Santos (Mayor of Kingstown), and Brett Cullen, who previously appeared in Narcos.
Kebbel plays Belle, Santos is Andrea, and Means is Miles – all of them U.S. Marshals. Cullen plays Harry Gifford, the head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana, who oversees their work. This is a different role than what fans of Yellowstone are used to seeing from Kayce, though some familiar faces will return to connect the two shows.
I’m really excited about Y: Marshals! I know Spencer Hudnut did great work on SEAL Team, and he’s running this show too. It feels like it might have a similar vibe to that series, dealing with comparable kinds of stories. What’s even cooler is how connected it is to Yellowstone behind the scenes. Taylor Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, is an executive producer, along with a lot of other talented people like David C. Glasser, John Linson, and several others – even Hudnut himself!
