XDefiant officially shutting down as Ubisoft announces FPS end date

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I bid farewell to XDefiant. It was just six short months ago that this promising free-to-play FPS entered our gaming landscape, and now it’s time to say goodbye.

Approximately half a year after its official launch, it has been officially announced that XDefiant will be discontinued as of June 3, 2025. This information was shared by Executive Producer Mark Rubin on the platform X (previously known as Twitter).

After several weeks of discussion about player numbers and continued support, it has been confirmed that XDefiant is leaving the scene. Ubisoft’s FPS game will gradually lose its support in the upcoming months. Players who bought premium packages within the last month will be eligible for refunds.

From now on, it won’t be possible to download the game anymore. So, anyone who already has the game installed can keep playing, should they wish to continue, but no further updates or new installations will be available. However, Season 3 will still proceed as scheduled, with no additional content planned beyond that point.

Dear XDefiant Community,

— Mark Rubin (@PixelsofMark) December 3, 2024

Beginning December 3, 2024, we’re sad to announce that we’re phasing out this game from our services, a process we call ‘sunsetting.’ Although you can continue playing until June 3, 2025, we won’t be accepting new players from today onwards.

In simple terms, if you bought the most expensive cosmetic pack (Ultimate Founders Pack) at launch, which cost $69.99 USD, you’ll receive a complete refund. Additionally, players who purchased digital currency or Season Passes within the last 30 days will also get their money back in full.

Recognizing the advancement of [XDefiant], Rubin proudly acknowledged the dedication of the development team for staying committed to their decisions. He proudly declared that “[XDefiant] shattered internal records as the fastest game to amass over 5 million users, and in the end we had more than 15 million players enjoying our game,” he asserted on X.

Indeed, it’s surprising to learn that XDefiant is reportedly ending its run, given Rubin’s assertion only a few weeks back on October 16th that the game wasn’t about to disappear anytime soon after the latest update. However, it seems plans have changed since then.

Initially acknowledging a decrease in numbers, Rubin continued to advocate strongly for the long-term survival of FPS. By this point, insiders had exposed various upcoming content such as collaborations with franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, among others.

Behind the scenes of XDefiant, it’s been announced that Ubisoft studios worldwide are experiencing changes. Reports suggest that as many as 277 employees may lose their jobs due to the closure of Ubisoft’s San Francisco and Osaka offices, along with a reduction in operations at its Sydney office. Insider Stephen Totilo claims that half of the XDefiant team will be reassigned to other projects within the company.

At first, XDefiant was presented as a competitor for Activision’s first-person shooter (FPS) dominator, Call of Duty. With several ex-Call of Duty developers and skilled players on board, open dialogue was emphasized right from the start.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been eagerly waiting for this free-to-play FPS that was painstakingly crafted from scratch. Its journey to early 2024 release was far from smooth, with numerous roadblocks and setbacks along the way. However, when the game officially dropped, it came with a slew of bugs and performance glitches. Yet, despite these initial hiccups, it managed to resonate with a dedicated group of players.

After some time passed, we saw regular additions such as Factions, new maps, weapons, and advanced progression systems. Furthermore, continuous updates addressed various issues including network problems and powerful abilities, with the Spiderbot’s overpower being a notable example.

By the time servers close, XDefiant will have been live for a total of 378 days.
