Phil Spencer is no longer targeting Xbox sales to PlayStation enthusiasts, instead, his company is concentrating on making their games accessible to a larger number of players.
Initially, Xbox consoles were known for creating some exceptional exclusive games, such as Gears of War, Halo, and Forza, which could only be played on this specific platform. Microsoft indeed had highly attractive games that significantly boosted the sales of their system.
Over time, significant shifts have occurred, largely due to Xbox’s aggressive buying sprees, which transformed it into a major player in the publishing sector. Moreover, its strategic emphasis on Game Pass and expansion into the PC market have also contributed to these changes.
Despite anticipation, viewers were taken aback as the PS5 emblem appeared in some game previews during the 2025 Xbox Developer Direct. As stated by the Head of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, such occurrences are likely to happen more frequently from now on.
Xbox focused on allowing more people to play its games
In a conversation with XboxEra, Phil Spencer expressed the financial advantage of catering to players within their preferred gaming environments on PlayStation and Nintendo systems. Essentially, he stated, “I’m no longer focused on shifting everyone over to Xbox… Instead, let’s make it easier for more people to enjoy games.
Furthermore, Spencer posited that “controlling access to games” provides no advantage. Though these platforms once reigned supreme as the biggest players in the market, it is now the games themselves that hold this position.
Essentially, the role of the industry is to empower creators, regardless of scale, to share their narratives via video games and make them accessible to a wider audience. The executive stated that they aim for Xbox to serve as the platform facilitating such storytelling endeavors.

Spencer also addressed the oddity of showing a PlayStation logo during an Xbox Developer Direct.
The head of Xbox clarified it as straightforward and open communication about the locations of the games, stating this was their approach. Earlier, they had similar discussions for the June 2024 showcase. However, unfortunately, they ran out of time to gather all necessary materials before making a final decision on the matter.
It’s evident that the publisher has adopted a stance in relation to the “This is an Xbox” campaign. To illustrate, owners of PlayStation 5 are already able to enjoy Indiana Jones before its release on their Samsung TVs through the Xbox App.
For Spencer and Xbox, their extensive cross-platform approach enables them to handle large-scale projects at the same time as they cater to native hardware and service platforms. This benefits PlayStation enthusiasts immediately, and potentially those purchasing the Switch 2 down the line.
