Xbox May Be Dying, But Consoles Games Are Alive And Well, Says Analyst

Many people are wondering about the future of Xbox, especially now that games like The Outer Worlds 2 and even Halo are planned for PlayStation 5. While Microsoft is said to be developing the next Xbox, things aren’t looking great for the brand. Despite this, one leading video game analyst believes the struggles of Xbox don’t signal the end of gaming consoles in general.

According to the Alinea Insight newsletter by Rhys Elliott, the top-selling PlayStation 5 games projected for October 2025 are Battlefield 6, EA Sports FC 26, and Ghost of Yotei, with estimated sales of 3.2 million, 3 million, and 2.7 million units, respectively. These three titles are expected to sell almost 9 million copies combined. Elliott used these figures to counter the idea that consoles are becoming obsolete, stating that while Xbox may be struggling, it’s premature to declare console gaming as a whole is failing.

Microsoft has already seen benefits from releasing Xbox games on PlayStation 5. Several games that were once only available on Xbox became top sellers on the PlayStation platform earlier in the year.

Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto 5 were both popular choices, landing in fourth and seventh place respectively, likely due to regular updates and new content. EA Sports also had a strong showing, with three titles – FC 26, FC 25, and Madden NFL 26 – making the top 10. NBA 2K26 from Take-Two secured fifth place, selling over 564,000 copies last month.
