At the Xbox Developer Direct 2025 event held on January 23rd, just four games were unveiled to the delight of fans. This approach could serve as an example for future showcases on how to create anticipation and excitement with a limited number of reveals.
In many gaming presentations, it’s now customary to jam-pack a 30-minute to hour-long live stream with numerous game announcements, showing just brief glimpses of upcoming titles. This results in trailers that lack substance, offering little insight into the games they represent, leaving viewers unsatisfied and yearning for more at the end.
2025’s Xbox Developer Direct appears to be breaking away from the traditional approach of trailer overload, instead focusing on presenting and exploring in-depth four upcoming games from various studios during the showcase window. This format enabled developers to discuss their projects, display actual gameplay footage, and share insights about the purpose behind each game and its development process.
Looking at things from your point of view, I must admit that my enthusiasm for forthcoming launches has not been this high for quite some time. This is due to the fact that I clearly grasped what there was for me to find intriguing.
Context makes players care
At the Xbox Developer Direct event, we got an extensive look at several games including Ninja Gaiden 4, South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Doom: The Dark Ages. Instead of just quick trailers filled with vague, cinematic scenes, each game was given a detailed examination.
In my analysis, I covered the essentials of each game’s environment, gameplay dynamics, character motivations, and world settings, as well as what players can anticipate when they start playing. Specifically, I couldn’t help but feel thrilled for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 due to its captivating narrative driven by characters and innovative combat mechanics.
In a while, I haven’t received this much information from a non-game-specific showcase. It’s invigorating to learn about what’s being bought and anticipate what’s coming up for each game launch. This format should be the standard for other developers to follow in their showcases, as it would significantly reignite the enthusiasm of keeping tabs on games in development.
Nobody wants teasers
Over the last ten years, “teaser”-style trailers have grown in popularity. Unlike traditional ones, these previews typically don’t display complete gameplay footage, seldom disclose specific plot points, and instead use dramatic visuals and thrilling animations more often than revealing details about the product the developer is promoting.
Due to unclear information provided about the game and its content, players become increasingly disappointed when they invest money into high-priced titles, as they often don’t find what they were anticipating. In such cases, gamers have to rely on their imagination to form expectations about the game, with limited hints or previews to guide them.
The “Marvel Movie-like” trailer strategy aims to maintain an air of secrecy about most of the game’s features until its release, however, this method has fostered a degree of deceit between gamers and creators, resulting in mutual disappointment and hurt sentiments.
To ease this situation, it’s crucial to emphasize events similar to the Xbox Developer Direct, giving them priority. Additionally, providing greater insights such as project details and real gameplay demos during these showcases would be beneficial. I must admit, after watching the stream, every single one of those games has caught my interest, none of which were on my radar beforehand.
It felt wonderful to depart with a clear understanding of the features these games would provide, and with an unquestionable level of anticipation about them.
