In a surprising turn of events, Microsoft has announced that the new Halo remake, Halo: Combat Evolved, will also be released on PlayStation 5, marking the first time a Halo game will be available on PlayStation. A Microsoft executive explained this decision is due to the way people consume media today, with platforms like TikTok now competing for gamers’ attention more than other gaming consoles.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Xbox’s head of games, Matt Booty, explained the company is shifting its focus. He stated that Xbox is trying to reach players on the platforms they already use, which is why they’ve made Halo available on competing platforms. Booty emphasized that Xbox’s biggest challenge isn’t other gaming consoles, but rather competing for people’s attention with things like TikTok and movies.
According to Booty, Microsoft is aiming to expand the Xbox player base by introducing popular game series to new players. He also noted that people aren’t as tied to specific gaming consoles as they used to be.
Microsoft is following a trend started by Netflix, which in 2019 pointed out that it competes for viewers’ time with games like Fortnite, not just other streaming services like HBO. Netflix estimated it faced thousands of entertainment options vying for attention, and now Xbox sees competition in a similar light. This perspective could be why Xbox is experimenting with a free version of its cloud gaming service supported by ads.
For years, the rivalry between Xbox and PlayStation has been a common topic in the gaming world, and Microsoft often seemed to be at a disadvantage. Recently, Microsoft has been emphasizing its Game Pass subscription service and buying up many game development studios, leading some to believe they might stop making Xbox consoles. However, Microsoft has now confirmed that a new generation of Xbox is indeed being developed.
