Fans of Xbox have noticed several games that used to be exclusive are now available on PlayStation 5. At the same time, Microsoft has increased the prices of Game Pass and Xbox consoles in the United States. Now, Laura Fryer, an original member of the Xbox team, is publicly criticizing these price hikes, calling them a “betrayal” of the trust gamers had in the company.
In her recent YouTube video, content creator Fryer argued that Xbox has lost a key advantage with the latest Game Pass price increase. She previously considered Game Pass the best value in gaming, but now feels the price hike is a disappointing move driven by profit over player experience. Fryer believes this console generation will likely be remembered more for Microsoft’s pursuit of profit than for its gaming achievements.
Fryer then summarized the rising costs of gaming this generation, including two price hikes for consoles, three increases to the Game Pass subscription, pricier games overall, and significant job losses at many gaming companies and studios.
Fryer expressed concern that the recent changes and controversies could damage Microsoft’s reputation. He noted Xbox seems to be shifting its focus to cloud gaming and away from physical consoles, but also suggested the company might be struggling with its strategy. Fryer believes Xbox needs to regain the trust of its player base, and he’s optimistic that long-time members of the Xbox team can turn things around. He’s hoping for the best and is supporting their efforts.
Recently, Rebecca Fryer suggested Xbox is moving away from creating its own devices by having companies like Asus manufacture handhelds like the ROG Ally. However, Xbox Vice President Jason Ronald has since affirmed the company remains dedicated to developing its next generation of hardware.
After announcing changes to Game Pass, Microsoft clarified that not everyone will see price increases right away. However, the higher-priced Game Pass plan will no longer include a popular benefit for Call of Duty players. Experts are also predicting that Microsoft might introduce a cheaper, ad-supported version of Game Pass sometime in the future.
