A major development in 2025 was Microsoft’s decision to release more of its games on PlayStation, despite being a long-time competitor. These releases have proven popular with players, becoming top sellers, and next year will bring titles like Halo and Forza Horizon to PlayStation. Microsoft’s head of gaming, Matt Booty, recently discussed the success of Xbox games on the PS5 and the positive response to the Halo announcement.
According to Matt Booty, for a period between late April and late June, six of the ten most popular games on PlayStation were actually Xbox titles. He sees this as proof that their development teams are doing great work, and more importantly, it means more players are discovering and enjoying their games and worlds.
Halo is Xbox’s most important game, and the next installment – a remastered version of the original game called Halo: Combat Evolved – is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2026. Microsoft executives reported a positive reaction to the announcement and expressed satisfaction with their strategy of making their games available to a wider audience.
In a recent interview, Matt Booty discussed several topics, including Microsoft’s decision to reverse course on plans to charge $80 for new games, hinting that they’re exploring more flexible ways to make money from video games. He also addressed the lukewarm response to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and the difficulties of consistently releasing a new Call of Duty game annually.
Activision promises to avoid releasing consecutive games within the same Call of Duty storyline, such as back-to-back Modern Warfare or Black Ops titles. They’re also focusing on making significant improvements to the game each time, rather than just small changes.
