As an old-school gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the recent news from Microsoft about bringing PC games into the Xbox app is music to my ears! I remember the days when you needed multiple systems to play all your favorite games, and now it seems like Microsoft is making a serious effort to consolidate that experience.
Microsoft unveiled its aspiration to integrate Xbox-featured PC games within the Xbox application, and this ambition persists as they’ve now added over 400 games to the platform.
Chris Charla from Xbox revealed that games such as Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, Jackbox Party Pack, The Invincible, along with numerous titles from established studios Kemco and Kairosoft, have been added to the Xbox app. Moreover, Charla emphasized that around 100 of these games are compatible with Xbox Play Anywhere, a feature allowing users who purchase the console version to enjoy their games on PC as well.
Chatla mentioned that having universal ownership of Xbox, universal cloud saves, and cross-play compatibility between Xbox games on console and PC are some advantages of this setup. The Verge highlights that this is part of a broader strategy by Microsoft to attract developers from competing digital marketplaces. This strategy also involves Microsoft significantly reducing its commission from sales to only 12%. Chatla hinted at more updates to be revealed during the Game Developers Conference 2025, scheduled for next March.
Despite not being explicitly mentioned by Charla, it’s been suggested through a previous report that Xbox is currently testing and developing their cloud-connected controllers. The same report hinted at Microsoft’s efforts to enhance the visual quality of its streaming service, aiming to enable Xbox gameplay without requiring a console as powerful as the Xbox Series X|S. Additionally, this week saw Microsoft announcing an opportunity for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members to participate in a trial program that allows them to stream some of their owned games directly from Xbox consoles.
