Fans of the X-Men are in for a treat! Five key members of the team will appear in both the upcoming second season of *X-Men ’97* and the *Avengers: Doomsday* project. The main difference will be who plays them – one version will be animated, the other live-action. This comes after the success of *X-Men ’97* on Disney+, with mutants already appearing in shows like *Deadpool & Wolverine* and the long-awaited *X-Men* movie finally moving forward at Marvel Studios, signaling a major resurgence for the team.
Starting in 2026, some X-Men characters will appear in two new Marvel Studios projects: X-Men ’97 and Avengers: Doomsday. While multiple X-Men will be featured in both, only a small number will cross over and appear in both shows. Importantly, each project will present different interpretations of the same characters.
While a release date for Season 2 of *X-Men ’97* hasn’t been announced yet, Marvel Studios says it will arrive in 2026. *Avengers: Doomsday* is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
5 Heroes Who Will Appear in X-Men ’97 Season 2 and Avengers: Doomsday
Cyclops
After Professor X vanished in *X-Men ’97* Season 1, Cyclops stepped up to lead the team. He’s confirmed to return for Season 2 and will likely remain a central figure. A key plot point is that he and Jean Grey were transported 2,000 years into the future.
Fans were excited when James Marsden was announced as part of the cast for *Avengers: Doomsday* in March 2025. He previously played the character in the *X-Men* movies from Fox, and many felt the character wasn’t well-developed in those films.
Fans are optimistic that Marvel Studios can revitalize the character with his role in *Doomsday*, and there’s a chance he might also appear in *Avengers: Secret Wars*.
Professor X
The first season of *X-Men ’97* ended with a shocking twist: Professor X and several key characters were unexpectedly transported back in time to ancient Egypt, roughly 5,000 years ago. Season 2 will continue Professor X’s story in this new setting, and will also introduce the villain Apocalypse, building on the events of the season one finale.
Patrick Stewart has already played his iconic role as Charles Xavier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He appeared in *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness* as a member of the Illuminati, but was ultimately killed by Wanda Maximoff, along with the rest of the group.
Interestingly, Patrick Stewart is also set to play a version of Charles Xavier in the upcoming movie *Avengers: Doomsday*, as his name was part of the initial cast list.
Beast
Kelsey Grammer will reprise his role as Beast in both the upcoming seasons of X-Men ’97 and Avengers: Doomsday. He’ll be joining forces with both the X-Men and the Avengers to battle Doctor Doom.
As a huge Marvel fan, I found it really interesting seeing Kelsey Grammer play Beast in *The Marvels*. That post-credits scene was a game-changer! Seeing Monica Rambeau pulled into another universe, and then Grammer’s Beast showing up… it definitely hinted at the X-Men, and especially Beast, playing a big role in the upcoming *Doomsday* movie. It’s exciting to think about where they’re taking the story!
I was really captivated by the ending of *X-Men ’97* Season 1! It looks like Beast’s story is going to continue in ancient Egypt when Season 2 arrives, since that’s where he went with the team. I’m so excited to see what happens to him there!
Nightcrawler
Alan Cumming’s character, Nightcrawler, was a key part of the second X-Men movie, X2. He’s set to reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday, though details about how much he’ll be in the film are still unknown. Cumming has spoken about being excited to return to the character.
At the end of X-Men ’97 Season 1, Nightcrawler, similar to Beast, ended up in ancient Egypt. There, he might get caught in a fight between a younger Apocalypse and Rama-Tut, who is actually an earlier form of Kang the Conqueror.
Magneto
Ian McKellen played Magneto as a villain, not a hero, throughout the X-Men movies. But he’s coming back in Avengers: Doomsday, and it’s likely he’ll team up with both the X-Men and the Avengers to battle Doctor Doom. Magneto’s biggest priority is protecting mutants, and if Doctor Doom threatens them, Magneto won’t hesitate to take action.
Magneto will be a key character in the second season of *X-Men ’97*. Like the others, he’s been sent back in time and is now in Egypt with the team.
BONUS: Gambit
Gambit will reappear in Season 2 of *X-Men ’97* and also in *Avengers: Doomsday*. However, he probably won’t be a traditional hero in *X-Men ’97*. Although Gambit died in Season 1, a scene after the credits showed Apocalypse with his playing card, suggesting he’ll return as the Horseman of Death.
Channing Tatum has been confirmed as part of the cast for Avengers: Doomsday. While he initially avoided directly answering questions about reprising his role as Gambit, his recent appearance as the character in Deadpool & Wolverine strongly suggests that’s the role he’ll be playing in the new movie.
