Before seeing some of the original X-Men movie actors return in December 2026’s Avengers Doomsday, Season 2 of X-Men ’97 will continue the story that started in the ‘90s with X-Men: The Animated Series. Naturally, Disney+ is keeping the specific plot details under wraps to avoid spoiling things for subscribers. However, Ross Marquand, who provides voices for multiple characters in X-Men ’97, has said that Season 2 will be “very, very dark,” which made me think of my favorite episode from Season 1, “Remember It.”
Ross Marquand not only provided the voice for Professor X in Season 1 but also voiced Apocalypse – a major villain from X-Men: The Animated Series who made a brief appearance in “Tolerance is Extinction Part 3.” While participating in a Walking Dead panel at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, led by Collider, Marquand (known for playing Aaron in the AMC series) revealed that the upcoming season of X-Men ’97 will be “very dark” and will feature “a lot of scenes” with him as Apocalypse, then stated:
[I’m] surprised Disney approved this project, considering how intense it is. It’s really quite dark – a significant number of characters die, and it’s a topic many avoid discussing. Just being honest.

That quote immediately brings to mind “Remember It,” the fifth episode of Season 1, which received an Emmy nomination. It depicted Master Mold and its Sentinel army killing thousands of mutants on Genosha. While Magneto was later shown to have survived the attack, the same wasn’t true for Gambit, who gave his life to destroy Master Mold. However, the season finale hinted at Apocalypse finding a playing card amidst the ruins of Genosha, so I believe it’s reasonable to expect Remy LeBeau will be brought back to life, though likely not in the best situation.

‘That’s The Cajun Right There’: X-Men 97’s director explains the Gambit scene, revealing it went through several changes before they were completely satisfied with the final result.
The creator of X-Men ’97 recently revealed how the first season’s finale almost featured Kitty Pryde and Colossus. Honestly, I’m relieved that idea didn’t make the cut!
It seems that X-Men ’97 Season 2 will feature even more character deaths than the first season. This time, characters can die in three different time periods. The Season 1 finale sent Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier, and Magneto back to Ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C., where they encountered a young En Sabah Nur, also known as Apocalypse. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Jean Grey were transported to 3960 A.D., where they met Mother Aksani (voiced by Gates McFadden) and a young Nathan Summers. The current location of Wolverine, Storm, and Morph is still a mystery.
Currently, Jubilee, Sunspot, Forge, and Bishop are still active in the present day of this story. It seems Bishop and Forge will soon be heading off to rescue the X-Men who have been lost in time. However, if Apocalypse is building a new team of his Four Horsemen – including Gambit – then we can anticipate many losses. Depending on when the X-Men from Ancient Egypt and the year 3960 return, Jubilee and Sunspot might have to gather a new group of allies to fight against Apocalypse’s control.
I’ll be happy if the deaths in X-Men ’97 Season 2 have the same impact as the events in the episode “Remember It.” For now, we’ll keep you updated on what’s coming in the next episodes and when they’ll be released as part of the upcoming Marvel TV show schedule.
