X has rolled out a new feature that’s got everyone talking. Turns out, a lot of accounts aren’t really who they say they are

X (formerly Twitter) has added several new features lately, like secure direct messages, the ability to upload 4K videos, and improvements to how content is recommended. However, the biggest recent change is to the “About This Account” section, which now displays the account’s country or region.

X adds account location

When you look at the join date on X profiles now, you’ll see more information than just when the account was first made. It also reveals how many times the username has been changed, any connected accounts, and the account’s general location. This update is designed to help people identify real accounts versus bots. The “Account based in” feature specifically makes it easier to notice if someone isn’t actually located where they say they are in their profile or where you might expect them to be. Many users are already pointing out accounts where the stated location doesn’t match their bio.

While this feature is great for personal X accounts, companies often have social media handled by teams in other countries, so it doesn’t really apply to them.

The new feature isn’t without its drawbacks. Some users are uncomfortable with their country being displayed, despite the privacy controls available. X initially shows your country, but you can change it to a larger region or continent. You’ll find this setting within the app’s Privacy and safety options, under the “About your account” section.

If you click the information icon next to a person’s country or region, X clarifies that their listed location might not be current. It can be influenced by recent travel or temporary stays and is subject to change.

You might also see a message saying that your location could be inaccurate if you’re using a VPN. Sometimes, internet providers automatically use proxies, which can also make it appear like you’re hiding your location, even if you’re not intentionally doing so.
