Wyatt Russell won’t play “geriatric Snake Plisskin” or any other Kurt Russell character

Wyatt Russell is tired of being asked to portray roles his father, Kurt Russell, famously played, and he definitely doesn’t plan on taking on the character of an older Snake Plisskin.

Wyatt Russell started his acting career with small, uncredited parts in films starring his father, Kurt Russell, such as Overboard, Escape From LA, and Soldier.

He’s built a successful career on his own, and is now widely recognized for his role as John Walker in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the movie Thunderbolts, and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Currently, Russell is starring in Apple TV+’s ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ playing a character very similar to one his father famously portrayed. This has led fans to wonder if he’d be interested in appearing in future installments or reboots of his father’s well-known films.

Wyatt Russell is too old for Escape From New York

Okay, so someone guessed I was 27, which is hilarious – I’m actually creeping up on 40! 😂 Seriously though, it’s wild to be stepping into roles my dad, Kurt Russell, made famous, like Snake Plissken. It’s a lot to live up to, but it’s been awesome.

I was scrolling through the comments on the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 trailer, and a lot of people are talking about Wyatt Russell. They’re hoping he’ll play Snake Plisskin in a new Escape From New York movie – either a remake or a sequel. It’s a pretty popular idea!

Russell says he finds it funny that people often suggest he play a younger version of himself. He points out that he’s actually ten years older now than his father was when he first played the character Snake Plisskin.

People keep guessing I’m around 27, which is hilarious! Honestly, I’m creeping up on 40. I feel like an old man—like a super ancient version of Snake Plisskin—so whatever they’re expecting from me, it’s just not gonna happen.

No interest in The Thing or Big Trouble in Little China sequels

People still don’t know Wyatt Russell is Kurt Russell’s son 😂

Russell gets why people are excited about potential remakes of ‘The Thing’ or ‘Big Trouble in Little China,’ but he strongly opposes them.

“It’s definitely fun to think about those movies, because they were really good!” Russell explains. “My issue with them, personally, is that John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, and Dean Cundy essentially came up with everything from scratch.”

It’s not something you can just recast like with typical franchises. Jack Burton, the character Kurt Russell played, is incredibly tied to his performance – it’s very specific to him. I really don’t think anyone should try to remake it, and that includes me. Those kinds of movies just don’t usually turn out well when they’re remade.

Wyatt and Kurt Russell star in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which premiered on Apple TV today. For more TV and movie interviews, be sure to subscribe to our new ScreenTime YouTube channel!
