WWE’s Becky Lynch Isn’t A Star Trek Fanatic, But Her Favorite Actor In The Franchise Has Me Thinking She’ll Crush Starfleet Academy

Good news for Star Trek fans! The new series, Starfleet Academy, will be available on Paramount+ starting January 15th. I’m even more excited about it after seeing the trailer, especially because Becky Lynch, one of my favorite wrestlers, is appearing as a character on the show.

WWE star Becky Lynch, known as “The Man,” is joining the 32nd-century world of Star Trek. Collider recently revealed a first look at her character, sporting a bob haircut and a yellow uniform. Lynch will be part of the ship’s bridge crew. Although she isn’t a lifelong Star Trek fan, she did mention that she always enjoyed watching one actor from Ireland who appeared on the show.

When I was growing up in Ireland, Star Trek was a constant presence on television – we only had four channels back then, so it was always playing somewhere in the house. I wasn’t always a dedicated viewer, but I really enjoyed the movies, and everyone loved seeing Colm Meaney on screen. Whenever he was on, you’d make sure to watch!

Colm Meaney’s character, Miles O’Brien, is a fan favorite from both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and his smaller role in The Next Generation. Although Meaney has stated he doesn’t want to reprise the role, I’m hoping Becky Lynch was inspired by the famously grumpy engineer—who Lower Decks jokingly called the ‘most important person in Starfleet history.’ If Lynch based her performance on Meaney’s work, she’s sure to be fantastic.

I’m Excited About The Latest Star Trek Movie News, But Have One Big Request As A Longtime Fan

Okay, so Becky Lynch’s new yellow outfit? It’s a really interesting choice, especially for fans of Discovery. See, that color is specifically for the engineering team on that show, and we first saw Jett Reno rocking it. It makes me wonder if there’s a connection they’re building there. Honestly, what I really want to see is Lynch sharing a scene with Tig Notaro. Imagine the witty banter – a sarcastic back-and-forth between those two would be comedy gold!

If you’re curious why Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has a bridge crew, it’s because the Academy itself is also a functioning starship, set in the 32nd century. However, since the show mainly focuses on students, it’s unclear how much screen time the ship’s crew will actually get.

It seems the new show will focus heavily on classroom scenes, and that’s probably why Robert Picardo is returning as the Emergency Medical Hologram from Star Trek: Voyager. I’m excited by the possibility that he’ll be used to bring back other actors from previous Star Trek series – he can always create a holographic version of anyone. Hopefully, though, we won’t see a repeat of the unpredictable glitches that caused so much trouble on Voyager.
