2024 saw a record high in home entertainment consumption among British residents, exceeding £5.1 billion ($6.4 billion) for the first time, as per recently disclosed figures by the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE). This significant milestone signifies remarkable expansion across streaming platforms, premium digital content, and physical formats.
In summary, the overall worth of the U.K.’s screen industry, encompassing cinema and Pay TV, expanded by 4.3% to an impressive $15.5 billion. When taking into account the entire entertainment sector, its value soared to a staggering $37.4 billion. These figures clearly demonstrate that the United Kingdom holds a significant position in the global market for visual entertainment.
In 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery reigned supreme on the annual box office charts. “Wonka” emerged as the year’s number one title, selling a staggering 821,000 copies. Hot on its heels was “Dune: Part Two”, with 817,000 units sold, securing the second position while leading in physical sales, with 132,000 disc units equating to a revenue of $2.5 million.
Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winning film “Oppenheimer” continued its winning streak, securing the position as the most rented title this year with a staggering 487,000 Video on Demand (VOD) transactions. On the other hand, Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” ruled digital sales, recording 465,000 Electronic Sell-Through (EST) units, and amassing a total of 621,500 units across all formats when combined with its physical sales.
“Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan, which won an Oscar, sold the most rentals this year (487,000 times) through Video on Demand. Meanwhile, Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” was the best-seller for digital purchases (465,000 units) and overall sales (621,500 units when you add physical sales).
In the realm of streaming, there were substantial changes as approximately 18.6 million U.K. households utilized Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) services, with an average of 2.9 platforms per household. Netflix retained its dominant position with 17.3 million homes, closely followed by Prime Video at 13.4 million and Disney+ at 7.5 million. The ad-supported tiers contributed an extra $499 million in consumer value, while premium ad-supported online video revenue experienced a 36% increase, reaching $2.1 billion.
In the premium market, traditional physical formats demonstrated durability. For instance, the sales of 4K UHD Blu-ray discs surged by 21% compared to last year, shifting approximately 1.3 million units and generating revenue of $38 million. Titles such as “Aliens,” “The Terminator,” and “The Lord of the Rings” from the catalog played a significant role in this growth spurt.
In the year 2024, a total of 1,605 new productions were launched across various home entertainment platforms, in addition to 1,114 theatrical releases. The number of Premium Video-on-Demand (PVOD) and Premium Electronic Sell-Through (PEST) titles grew by 15%, amounting to 62 titles. These digital releases typically became available 40 days after their theatrical premieres.
Liz Bales, CEO of BASE, stated that watching visual entertainment is the preferred leisure activity in the U.K., and viewers are making smart decisions when it comes to home entertainment options. She pointed out that premium digital formats have been breaking records in 2025, with ‘Wicked’ being the most sought-after premium title since data collection started, after its simultaneous Premium Video-on-Demand (PVOD) and Premium Electronic Sell-Through (PEST) launch on January 3.
Moving forward, BASE co-chair Marie-Claire Benson expressed positivity regarding 2025, referencing promising key performance indicators from late 2024 and upcoming projects. “The 2025 schedule is solid and varied,” she pointed out, emphasizing upcoming releases such as the Mark Wahlberg action movie “Flight Risk” and the film “The Penguin Lessons” starring Steve Coogan.
The progression of digital change in the market is evident with the surge of more than 750 FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television) channels across eight main platforms in the U.K., a trend that could potentially generate $12.1 billion in revenue by 2029, indicating yet another major evolution in how people in Britain watch content.
