Wonder Woman Game Has Reportedly Already Cost WB Games $100 Million, Nowhere Close To Releasing

A fresh piece of information about Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game has surfaced, suggesting that the production has secretly been restarted and has already accumulated more than $100 million in expenses for Warner Bros. It’s alleged that the release of this Wonder Woman game is still several years down the line.

According to sources close to the project, a video game inspired by Wonder Woman has faced difficulties in coming together. As reported by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, the game underwent a reboot and change of directors early last year. The production cost has already surpassed $100 million, these anonymous sources mentioned, and it remains unclear if the game will ever reach the market, given that it is still years away from release.

According to Schrier, following the release of Middle-earth: Shadow of War in 2017, Monolith had plans to create a fresh franchise with a focus on procedural storytelling within its design. However, Warner Bros. executives allegedly showed no interest in this concept, and three years later, the project was scrapped. Instead, the executives advised Monolith to work on an existing franchise. After the departure of studio head Kevin Stephens and other key creatives (who later formed a new studio at EA for a Black Panther game), the remaining members of Monolith started working on the Wonder Woman game.

As an ardent fan, I’ve learned that initially, the creators of this upcoming game were brainstorming a unique twist on the Nemesis system, similar to the Mordor games, where Wonder Woman could form alliances with her adversaries. However, this concept was later abandoned, opting instead for a more conventional action-adventure game format. Unfortunately, the fate of this project may now hang in the balance.

Back in 2021 at The Game Awards, Monolith unveiled their Wonder Woman game for the first time. Since then, they’ve been relatively silent about its progress, except for confirming that it won’t be a live-service game. Last year, rumors of development troubles started surfacing.

Warner Bros. Games has been experiencing a series of unsuccessful game launches lately. For instance, Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a financial disappointment, with estimated losses of around $200 million for the company. Similarly, Warner Bros. Montreal’s Gotham Knights had modest sales upon release, and MultiVersus will be closing its doors in May.
