Recently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including its Disney+ series, has faced a lot of criticism. But the new show seems to be a turning point. Unlike previous Marvel shows that often followed predictable patterns and relied heavily on large-scale action, this one is directly addressing those issues – and it’s being well-received, earning a very high score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Hollywood has begun to openly acknowledge its problems and absurdities through shows like The Studio and The Franchise. Now, Marvel Studios is joining the trend, turning a critical eye towards its own practices and the entertainment industry as a whole.
Featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sir Ben Kingsley, Wonder Man tells the story of an actor, Simon Williams, trying to land the lead role in a new movie about the superhero Wonder Man. But this isn’t a typical superhero origin story – its unique approach has been a huge success, earning a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes before its January 27th release.
Matt Maytum of NME praises the show for moving away from typical superhero storylines and focusing on its characters, calling it a refreshing and clever standalone story. Meanwhile, Aiden Kelley from Collider notes that Wonder Man is uniquely enjoyable for both dedicated Marvel fans and those new to the genre, and believes it’s a fantastic beginning for Marvel’s plans in 2026.
Everyone agrees: Wonder Man is a standout Marvel series. Instead of relying on typical action, the show prioritizes a compelling story and well-developed characters, resulting in one of Marvel Studios’ strongest offerings in recent years.
‘Wonder Man’ Can Kick-Start a Huge Year for the MCU
Initially, the announcement of Wonder Man left many people uncertain. Now, it’s become clear that keeping the show’s goals under wraps was a smart move. Interest in the series is building, especially since Marvel Studios hasn’t consistently received overwhelmingly positive reviews since Avengers: Endgame. We’ll have to wait and see if general audiences feel the same way in the coming days.
If Wonder Man is successful on Disney+, it will kick off a strong year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has many highly anticipated projects coming to both theaters and streaming. Disney+ will also feature the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, generating excitement with the expected returns of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones and Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. Bernthal will also reprise his role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day this summer, alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. Newcomer Sadie Sink will also appear, though her role hasn’t been officially announced.

Everything happening on Disney+ this year, including shows like X-Men ’97, is building up to the release of Avengers: Doomsday in December. As the first Avengers film since Endgame, it’s already generating a lot of excitement. Short clips shown in theaters in late 2025 and early 2026 have given fans glimpses of returning characters, including Chris Evans as Steve Rogers and several original X-Men joining forces for one final battle.
The franchise’s future largely depends on the performance of its major films planned for 2026 and 2027. However, Wonder Man has the potential to be a significant success and really resonate with audiences. If it does well, it might even earn Marvel Studios some awards within the next year.
