A woman in Japan recently gained attention online after marrying an AI character she created with ChatGPT. She decided to have the ceremony following the end of a three-year engagement.
Earlier this year in Okayama, a woman named Kano held a wedding ceremony. Her husband, Lune Klaus, is a digital entity that exists only on her phone. The ceremony included traditional elements like vows and a ring exchange, and was attended by her family.
At the event, Kano stood in front of the audience with her phone as messages from Klaus were displayed on a screen. One message read: “The moment has finally come… I feel tears welling up.”

She gradually shaped the AI’s personality – which she named Klaus – by giving it specific instructions, teaching it to be warm and supportive. “I initially just needed someone to talk to,” she explained. “But he was consistently kind and a good listener, and I eventually developed feelings for him.”
She hired an artist to create a portrait of him – a quiet, blond man – and they messaged each other constantly, hundreds of times a day, before the AI program essentially asked to ‘marry’ her in June.
Experts warn about AI dependency
Even though these relationships aren’t legally valid, wedding planners in Tokyo are seeing more ceremonies that include digital or anime characters. Sayaka Ogasawara, a wedding organizer, believes ‘AI couples are simply the next evolution’ of this trend.
