In 1981, the game Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord launched on Apple II, becoming a hugely influential title and essentially creating the fantasy adventure genre as we know it. The original game didn’t have music, so when Digital Eclipse remade it in 3D in 2024, they asked acclaimed composer Winifred Phillips to create a brand new soundtrack. That music, evoking the feeling of being a medieval adventurer in a world of swords and magic, won a GRAMMY® Award in 2025 for Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games.
The soundtrack features a wide range of historical instruments from across the medieval world, including gitterns, viola da gamba, recorders, pipes, bone flutes, organs, lutes, frame drums, and various other medieval percussion instruments. As a tribute to the game’s history, Phillips also composed a powerful choral anthem, “Wrath of the Wizard,” incorporating the ancient language found in the original Wizardry spellbook.
