With ‘1923’ Ending, ‘Yellowstone’ Prequel ‘1944’ Saddles Up Next

As we turn the page from the year “1923” to “1944”, the Dutton family’s narrative now advances.

In line with our earlier announcement, “1944” is set to be the next installment in the “Yellowstone” prequel series on Paramount+, following “1883” and “1923.” Details about the storyline are being kept secret for now, but it’s expected that the narrative will explore how World War II influenced the Yellowstone Ranch and the Dutton family.

SPOILERS FOR “1923” AHEAD

As a die-hard film aficionado, I was left reeling by the finale of “1923.” In this heart-wrenching conclusion, my beloved character Spencer Dutton, portrayed brilliantly by Brandon Sklenar, tragically loses his wife Alex (Julia Schlaepfer). Yet, despite this devastating loss, Spencer manages to carry on and raise their son for another 45 years. This son is none other than John Dutton II, the father of “Yellowstone’s” central character, John Dutton III. Given that John II would have been 21 in 1944, it’s not hard to imagine him as our main protagonist for the series. It’s intriguing to consider if Sklenar will reprise his role as Spencer in 1944; he certainly seems open to the idea.

In the interview linked to the finale, Sklenar mentioned that there are plans for a setting in “1944”, and it’s possible we might see Spencer in this time period. This is something he expressed interest in exploring.

It’s not surprising that the decision to proceed with more “Yellowstone” prequels was made, considering the success of both “1923” and “1883.” These spin-offs have attracted a large audience, and “1883” even received three Emmy nominations. Additionally, Season 1 of “1923” garnered two Golden Globe nominations, one of which was for best drama series.

Taylor Sheridan’s connection with Paramount grew stronger through the prequels, as he’s currently under a substantial overarching contract with them. “Yellowstone” wrapped up after five seasons in December 2024, but another series called “The Madison,” featuring Michelle Pfeiffer, is on its way, and a spinoff focusing on Beth and Rip is being developed. Additionally, there have been initial talks about a Kayce Dutton spinoff at CBS.

In addition, Sheridan is associated with several other series on Paramount+, including “Landman,” “Tulsa King,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” and “Lioness.
