The classic movie *Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory*, featuring the late Gene Wilder, will soon be removed from its current streaming platform. Released in 1971, the film became a beloved hit and led to two follow-up movies starring Johnny Depp and Timothée Chalamet.
The classic film *Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory* will be removed from Netflix on November 1st, according to What’s on Netflix. Starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka and Peter Ostrum as Charlie Bucket, the movie is based on Roald Dahl’s 1964 book, *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*. For over 50 years, this beloved fantasy film has become a classic, currently holding a 90% rating from critics and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 250,000 reviews.
Although *Willy Wonka* wasn’t initially a box office success – earning only $4 million despite costing $3 million to make – it gained a dedicated following through television broadcasts and a popular re-release in 1996 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The film remains a beloved cult classic. Gene Wilder once described his vision for how he’d first appear as Willy Wonka, telling Yahoo he wanted to enter walking with a limp and using a cane.
Wilder described how the crowd reacted when they saw his character, Willy Wonka, was disabled. They began to whisper and then fell completely silent. As he walked towards them, his cane unexpectedly stuck in the cobblestones and stood upright on its own. He continued walking, not realizing he’d lost his cane, until he started to fall forward. Just before hitting the ground, he miraculously did a forward somersault and landed back on his feet, earning a round of applause, he explained.
The Franchise Proved to be a Long-Term Success
The story of Willy Wonka continued after the classic 1971 film. In 2005, Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka in a new adaptation that received an Academy Award nomination for its costume design. The film starred Freddie Highmore, known for his role in the TV series *The Good Doctor*, as Charlie Bucket, and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Bucket. It was a financial success, earning $474.9 million globally on a $150 million budget, and is currently available to stream on HBO Max.
Timothée Chalamet starred as a young Willy Wonka in the 2023 film *Wonka*, alongside Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant. The movie was a box office success, earning $634.5 million globally on a budget of around $125 million, similar to the 2005 film. You can now watch it on HBO Max.
If you enjoy the classic musical *Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory*, you can watch it on Netflix, but it will be removed on November 1st.
