Bankside Films and Heretic are jointly handling global distribution for Miguel Ángel Jiménez’s “The Birthday Party.” This movie boasts an impressive ensemble cast, with four-time Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe (“Nosferatu,” “Poor Things”) as the lead. The companies plan to present this film to potential buyers and exhibit a promotional clip at the European Film Market.
Under the guidance of director Jimenéz, with contributions from Giorgos Karnavas and Nikos Panayotopoulos on the script, “The Birthday Party” is an adaptation of the book titled “The Birthday Party” penned by Panos Karnezis. Exclusively, EbMaster has been granted a sneak peek at a photograph from the movie, which is currently being finalized in post-production.
In the late 1970s, around the Mediterranean, the play “The Birthday Party” centers around Dafoe’s character, Marcos Timoleon, a wealthy tycoon reminiscent of Onassis, who is hosting an opulent, grandiose birthday bash for his only heir, Sofia, on his luxurious private island.
Marcos, who is accustomed to harshly managing everything and everyone nearby regardless of the consequences, is also surreptitiously planning a significant decision for his daughter. As guests accumulate and the evening progresses, the party becomes increasingly boisterous and debauched, foreshadowing the explosive confrontation between Marcos and Sofia.
In this movie, acting alongside Daniel Dafoe are emerging talents such as Vic Carmen Sonne (“The Girl With the Needle”), BAFTA nominee Joe Cole (“Peaky Blinders”), and Spanish actress Emma Suárez (“Julieta”). The supporting cast features Carlos Cuevas, Christos Stergioglou, Antonis Tsiotsiopoulos, Pelle Heikkilä, Fransesc Garrido, Maria Pau Pigem, and Elsa Lekkakou.
The movie is being created by George Karnavas (known for “Hot Milk” and “Triangle of Sadness”), from Heretic Productions. Co-producing this film are Adria Mones from Fasten Films, Kurban Kassam from Raucous Pictures, as well as Erik Glijnis and Leontine Petit from Lemming Film.
