Will Trent’s Season 4 Premiere Delivered A ‘Very Questionable’ Cliffhanger, But I Can Rest Easy About Angie And Will’s Relationship After One Touching Scene

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first episode of Will Trent Season 4, titled “…Speaking Of Sharks.” The episode is available to stream the day after it airs with a Hulu subscription.

The TV show Will Trent returns to ABC in 2026 after a long wait. The last season ended with the fates of Ormewood and Amanda uncertain, but the new season quickly revealed they both survived. Five months have passed, and Angie is now pregnant. However, trouble is brewing with the arrival of Ulster, setting up a dramatic and suspenseful start to Season 4, true to Will Trent‘s tradition of cliffhanger premieres.

Ramon Rodriguez, the show’s star, talked about the cliffhanger ending that made it look like Will and Ulster might die. But honestly, I’m feeling optimistic thanks to the episode “Speaking Of Sharks,” which left me hopeful about the futures of Angie, Will, and Seth.

The First Season 4 Cliffhanger

Following a shocking death of a character played by Susan Kelechi Watson at the start of the new season of Will Trent, I braced myself for dramatic twists and multi-episode storylines. The season four premiere didn’t disappoint: Will agreed to accompany Ulster after Ulster kidnapped his nephew, Calvin, who loves sharks.

The stakes are high for Ulster, and the latest episode ended on a shocking note: Amanda and Faith discovered a burned car containing what appeared to be the remains of Will’s recorder, suggesting he was inside. This led viewers to wonder if Will Trent had begun the season by killing off his own character! While Ramón Rodriguez remained tight-lipped about the details, he hinted at more to come in an interview with TV Insider.

I can’t give away too many details, but this season will be a rollercoaster for viewers. The episode’s cliffhanger is designed to be unsettling. Don’t worry, Will Trent isn’t going to die in the first episode, but he will face some incredibly tough choices that challenge his strong moral compass. We’re going to explore what happens when we really push his limits and see how far he’s willing to go.

Okay, so Rodriguez hasn’t given away what happens after that crazy cliffhanger, but he has said his character’s got some really difficult decisions coming up in Season 4. The preview definitely hints that Angie and Faith are starting to think Will might still be alive, which is huge! But frustratingly, it doesn’t tell us how or what actually happened to him. Honestly, it just means we’re all going to be obsessing over it until the next episode drops. Personally, I’m planning on rewatching some of Angie’s best moments from “…Speaking Of Sharks” to distract myself!

Why I’m Feeling Good About Angie And Will

Surprisingly, the moment I felt most hopeful about Angie and Will’s future wasn’t even with Will present. It happened when Angie was talking to Franklin and Ormeword about her engagement to Seth. Even though Scott Foley was great in the role, I wasn’t very enthusiastic about her relationship with Seth in Season 3, because the question of whether Angie and Will would end up together had been so important throughout the show.

By the start of Season 4, the couple had happily adjusted to the pregnancy, and Will proposed with two rings! Angie said yes, but she was honest with her colleagues when they inquired about their relationship, explaining to them:

I really love Seth. He treats me so well, and when I’m with him, I feel like I can let go of my regrets. But I sometimes find myself wondering what things would be like with Will, and it makes me feel bad, even though I’m with Seth.

Even though it was a brief scene in a busy episode, Angie explaining her reasons for wanting to marry Seth, while still acknowledging her feelings for Will, reassured me that she’s making the right choice. Their past always felt weighed down by regret and past errors, so starting over with someone new like Seth seems healthy for her, and she clearly has strong feelings for him.

If Angie and Will become a couple, viewers will miss the tension of wondering if they will or won’t get together. However, their relationship could become even more compelling. While Will congratulated Angie on her engagement, he didn’t seem thrilled about it. Ramón Rodriguez discussed what might happen with their connection in Season 4.

Will and Angie have a very complex history, having shared so much over the years. Last season ended with the revelation that Angie’s pregnancy wasn’t Will’s – a painful blow for him, as he’d always wanted a family. This season, we’re exploring how these two, who are deeply connected through shared trauma, can adjust as Angie tries to build a new life. Ultimately, Will seems genuinely happy for Angie and supportive of her relationship with her doctor.

It’s likely Will Trent can’t fully explore his relationships until his friends and coworkers know he’s still alive. Don’t miss the next episode on ABC, Tuesday, January 13th, to see how the story of Ulster and Will concludes… for the time being. At the very least, Will Trent has reminded viewers that you should never underestimate Ulster while he’s still around!
