Spoilers below for Peacemaker season 2 finale, “Full Nelson.”
The second season of *Peacemaker* ended with a major cliffhanger for Chris, as his friends create Checkmate, a team inspired by the DC Comics group. However, Chris is unexpectedly sent to a secret prison planet by Rick Flagg Sr. While many assumed this meant a third season was needed to wrap up the story, James Gunn says that’s not necessarily the case. He told Deadline that while he wouldn’t rule out a future season entirely, a third season isn’t currently planned. Instead, the finale seems to be setting the stage for *Man of Tomorrow* and potentially a spin-off series focused on Checkmate.
James Gunn shared with Deadline that the organizations Checkmate and the prison planet Salvation were planned as major elements of *Peacemaker* season 2, as they’ll play a role in future stories he has in mind for the DC Universe. He explained that these elements were always central to his larger narrative. While Checkmate is known for its spy work and has teamed up with Batman in the comics, Gunn doesn’t indicate that Batman will appear in this version of the story.
Let’s talk about the planet Salvation. It first appeared in a comic book storyline originally proposed by George R.R. Martin called *Salvation Run*, where it served as a place of exile for supervillains. They quickly became embroiled in a dramatic power struggle. Lex Luthor was one of those villains, and in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, he might be sent off-world again, potentially leading into the *Man of Tomorrow* storyline.
