After the success of the Freaky Friday remake, we’re looking forward to another nostalgic return from the early 2000s with The Princess Diaries 3. It’s been just over a year since Anne Hathaway confirmed the movie was happening, with Adele Lim set to direct. As we wait for filming to begin, many questions remain about the new film, and one of them was recently answered by a member of the original cast.
If you remember the movie The Princess Diaries from 2001, Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, had a crush on her best friend’s brother, Michael Moscovitz, played by Robert Schwartzman. The film ended with them sharing a first kiss at Mia’s royal ball. But the second movie surprisingly switched Mia’s love interest to Nicholas Devereaux, played by Chris Pine, who has even expressed interest in a potential new film. Now, Robert Schwartzman has shared that he’s been talking about a third movie. Here’s what he had to say:
I’m currently waiting to see what the filmmakers decide for the next installment. I’d be glad to reprise my role if they want Michael to be involved, and it’s always wonderful to hear fans expressing their desire to see the character return.
In a recent interview with People magazine, 42-year-old Jason Schwartzman mentioned he’s had some initial conversations about potentially being in Princess Diaries 3. He went on to say…
I’ve heard they’re beginning to develop the story and how it will unfold, but I don’t have many details yet.
It would certainly be a fun callback to see Mia’s crush from the first movie return somehow.
A major point of debate among fans will likely be the future of the romantic relationships. Will Mia and Michael stay together? Will Mia end up with Nicholas, played by Pine? Or will the story focus on Mia without any romance at all? Jason Schwartzman, who is both a musician and a director, believes the strong feelings of the fans could lead to Michael playing a significant role in the next movie. He explained further:
There’s definitely a chance to generate a lot of excitement, and I’m confident others will pay attention.

The most recent update on The Princess Diaries 3 came in August when director Adele Lim announced they were looking for an actress to play a new character, Olivia Robinson. Olivia is a 15-year-old of mixed heritage, and the description notes she’s intelligent, witty, guarded, and perceptive.
We still don’t know who Disney has cast in the role, or what’s happening with the movie—including if Julie Andrews will return. Anne Hathaway has been filming The Devil Wears Prada 2 with Meryl Streep and others, and that film just finished production a few weeks ago. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about this other sequel soon.
Either way, we’re not going to shut up about this upcoming release.
