April 3, 2025: Janelle James’ Time to Shine at the Emmys – Comedy Series Supporting Actress Category Commentary: It’s about time for Janelle James to make her grand entrance on the Emmy stage!

In the fourth season of “Abbott Elementary” on ABC, James is delivering an outstanding performance as Principal Ava Coleman. Initially, her character provided humor, but this season she has become a significant emotional focus. Her portrayal now encompasses depths that were previously unseen, such as vulnerability and endearing leadership, while maintaining her signature sharp-tongued, exaggerated style. With three previous nominations under her belt, James could finally take home the award this time, cementing her reputation as a top comedic actor on television.

Sheryl Lee Ralph has received well-deserved recognition for her role as veteran teacher Barbara Howard in the show. Her performance brings wisdom and warmth to the series, and she is likely to receive another nomination. Lastly, we eagerly anticipate Lisa Ann Walter’s first nomination for her portrayal of Philly native Melissa.

Right behind her steps Liza Colón-Zayas, the exceptional actress who truly shone as Tina in the third season of “The Bear” and was quite unexpectedly awarded last year. Could she repeat that victory this time around? If she does, she’d become the first Latina to claim two consecutive Acting Emmys, a groundbreaking achievement in television history.

Hannah Einbinder consistently shines in her role on “Hacks” for HBO/Max, however, she hasn’t received an award yet. On the other hand, Catherine O’Hara, a five-time Emmy winner, is back with comedy on Apple TV+’s “The Studio.” In this series, she portrays a network executive and producer, delivering her lines in a deadpan style that elevates each scene. Additionally, she might also be nominated for the supporting drama actress category in “The Last of Us,” which could boost her chances. Kathryn Hahn, one of O’Hara’s co-stars, has potential to receive recognition at the Emmys as well. She brings vibrant energy to Apple TV+’s series and is aiming for a nomination in the lead comedy actress category with “Agatha All Along.

Additionally worth mentioning are Jessica Williams from “Shrinking,” who continues to impress in her role, and Meryl Streep, whose performance in “Only Murders in the Building” on Hulu is yet to meet the 50% episode requirement (though due to recent Emmy rule changes, she must submit for supporting roles). As I’ve said before, “underestimate Meryl at your own risk.

Meg Stalter has yet to secure her initial Emmy nomination for “Hacks,” whereas Broadway sensation Patti LuPone may receive an invitation to the awards show for “Agatha All Along.
