On the “New Heights” podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce, it was revealed that comedian Will Ferrell disclosed the reasoning behind bringing back Buddy the Elf, portraying him as a scruffy, beer-drinking, smoking character. Ferrell’s reprisal of his famous “Elf” persona in such an unconventional manner caused quite a stir on social media platforms when he attended the Dec. 29 hockey match between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers, where Buddy was seen with a cigarette in mouth and holding a beer.
In his initial comments about the popular incident, Will Ferrell playfully implied that Buddy the Elf might have been fired from the North Pole. He was casually sipping beer and puffing on a cigarette, when he mentioned this idea. Occasionally, I get peculiar ideas like this. We’re regular season ticket holders for the L.A. Kings, sitting just inches from the ice. During the holiday break, I suggested to my wife that it would be amusing if I dressed up as Buddy the Elf, grew a beard, and sat with a candy cigarette for an entire period in our seats at the game, just to see how people would respond.
Ferrell exclaimed, “His response was utterly wild! It’s as if he’s endorsing something, but sometimes I enjoy acting strangely, just to create a buzz.”
Or:
“Ferrell commented, ‘His reaction was unbelievably crazy! It seemed like he was advertising something, but occasionally I find amusement in behaving oddly for the excitement of it.’
Live from the game, FanDuel Sports Network commentator Carrlyn Bathe conversed with Buddy. He shared that the holidays had been challenging for him and expressed his hope for a victory by the Kings.
Titled “Elf,” a film released back in the day that grossed over $220 million globally and has since become a beloved Christmas tradition, features Will Ferrell as a human brought up by Santa’s elves. In the story, he journeys to New York City to encounter his biological father, portrayed by James Caan. Unlike some of Ferrell’s other films like “Old School,” “Step Brothers,” which carry an R-rating, “Elf” leans towards family-friendly entertainment. Recently, Jason Kelce inquired about the scarcity of R-rated comedies on the podcast, prompting Ferrell to remind listeners that his R-rated comedy titled “You’re Cordially Invited,” co-starring Reese Witherspoon, will be available for streaming on Prime Video starting January 30.
Ferrell expressed his belief that the R-rated comedies are being produced, though he’s unsure why viewers aren’t going to cinemas for them. He noted that with all the streaming services available, many people prefer to watch these films at home. However, he emphasized that watching a comedy in a theater with an audience is far more enjoyable. They’re working towards recapturing that experience.
