Wild Thor and Loki Fantasy Film That’s Not MCU Canon Is Free to Stream And Needs to Be Seen

Fans are eagerly anticipating Avengers: Doomsday for many reasons, and a big one is seeing Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston return as Thor and Loki. If you can’t get enough of these Asgardian characters, there’s a movie you can currently watch for free.

The movie God of Thunder is a low-budget take on the classic Thor story from Norse mythology. It’s important to note that it’s completely separate from the popular Marvel movies. First released in 2015, you can now watch it for free on Tubi.

A heads-up to those interested: the film is currently listed as Thor: End of Days on the streaming platform, and even has a separate IMDb page under that name. This might be an attempt by the production company to connect the film to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, something often seen with similar low-budget movies. Alternatively, it could be to distinguish it from another film called Thor: God of Thunder, which also came out in 2022 and is available on Tubi.

Writer and director Thomas Shapiro appears to be drawing a connection between his film and the popular Thor movies by casting Max Aria, an actor who looks a little like Chris Hemsworth. Aria also attempts to imitate Hemsworth’s voice.

The storyline strongly resembles that of a Marvel character, with a key difference: instead of losing his powers, Thor suffers amnesia after landing on Earth. Loki, his adoptive brother, is again the villain, but the actor playing him doesn’t quite capture the same mischievous energy, and remains masked for much of the story.

Loki’s latest plan to destroy Earth echoes the plot of The Avengers – he’s again using an alien race as his weapon. However, this time the aliens invade by secretly taking over people’s bodies. Thor teams up with Freya (played by Jacqueline Fae) to stop him, though Freya isn’t a warrior goddess herself – she’s just an ordinary person caught up in the fight.

The film God of Thunder hasn’t received ratings from critics or general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. However, its IMDb pages both scored a very low 2.4 out of 10. Viewers haven’t been shy about sharing their negative reactions, criticizing the acting, inconsistent camera work, and poor special effects. Given the feedback, it might be best to wait and see if the December 18, 2026, release date improves things.

God Of Thunder Is Part Of An Endless Wave Of Superhero Movie Knock-Offs

Automatic Media, the company that made God of Thunder, can release its own Thor movie without facing legal issues from Marvel Studios because Marvel doesn’t own the copyright to the character. Thor comes from Norse mythology, which means it’s in the public domain. This isn’t the first low-budget Thor film to come out, either – several others have been made to capitalize on the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The movie Thor: God of Thunder isn’t the first low-budget take on the superhero. The Asylum, a company known for making cheap imitations of popular films—like their monster-vs-robots movie Atlantic Rim—released Almighty Thor the same year Marvel’s Thor came out.

Most popular superhero films have cheaper imitations, and many of those can be found on Tubi. For example, the service currently offers titles like Avenging Guardians (which doesn’t really follow the stories of The Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy at all) and Rise of the Black Bat, which is clearly inspired by Batman.

Right now, you can find Christopher Nolan films on Tubi, along with popular comic book movies like last year’s The Flash starring Michael Keaton as Batman. Considering that, it’s probably not fair to criticize God of Thunder for being available on a streaming service.
