We’re currently seeing a huge surge in spin-offs of the Real Housewives franchise, with Bravo (and Peacock) trying out all sorts of new ideas. Their latest show combines the premise of Wife Swap with the popular Real Housewives stars – but instead of Housewives switching lives with each other, they’ll be swapping with regular people. The first to participate is Angie Katsanevas from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, who will trade places with a mother of three living an off-grid lifestyle in Idaho – a bit like a modern take on a ‘fish out of water’ story.
It was a little strange at first seeing Angie’s home life filmed so differently than what we usually see on Housewives. Because this show follows the Wife Swap format, they really set the scene with her family – which, honestly, a lot of us already know pretty well. They’re building a story where Angie is seen as a bit high-strung, and her husband, Shawn, and daughter, Elektra, want her to relax more. They’re hoping this swap will help with that, and Angie’s hoping it’ll make her family realize how much they miss her. But let’s be real, a big part of this is probably just to see what happens when you put Angie in a totally different environment – it’s going to be entertaining!
To be honest, calling their home “sticks” is probably an overstatement. Angie is swapping lives with the Flakes – a family I’d describe as part of my limited dating options – who live a completely self-sufficient life in Challis, Idaho. Lindsay and her husband, Tanner, explain they made this change with their three young children to help manage Lindsay’s rheumatoid arthritis, and they truly live off the grid – they don’t even have running water! Surprisingly, they seem to know something about the Real Housewives. When Lindsay learns where she’s going, she actually wonders if she’s swapping with Lisa Barlow. It’s hard to imagine – Lisa Barlow wouldn’t have even made it up their driveway!
It seems Angie reacted strongly to the compost toilet, jokingly saying she’ll avoid the bathroom for three days. Meanwhile, Lindsay is thoroughly enjoying herself, admiring Angie’s heated bathroom floors, impressive sunglasses, and even reading the house rules from a scroll!
When Lindsay’s family came to meet Angie, she experienced the homestead life firsthand, starting with an outdoor bath. She was glad she’d brought plenty of dry shampoo! Things improved when they took her to a beautiful viewpoint on the property, riding ATVs – one even driven by a child. Tanner shared more about his wife’s health issues, explaining why they chose this lifestyle, which helped Angie understand things better, though she still wished for a proper shower. Angie also enjoyed spending time with their daughter, Hazel, especially since her own daughter, Elektra, is becoming more independent as a teenager.
Lindsay’s back in Salt Lake City and unexpectedly taking on Angie’s nightly deep cleaning duties while Shawn and Elektra relax. However, it’s not just about chores – Lindsay gets pampered with a nail technician visit before heading to the gym and salon. Meanwhile, Angie is doing much harder physical labor on the farm, hauling water and even having to empty their compost toilet – a messy job that definitely deserves extra pay, according to viewers!
When it’s time for the wives to move into their new houses, Lindsay announces they’ll be spending the night outdoors in the backyard, completely disconnected from modern conveniences. Elektra’s reaction is extreme – she looks absolutely horrified. There will be no showers and no phones, and it’s clear she’s hoping the filming crew will wrap up quickly and let them go back inside. Unfortunately, that’s not happening. Elektra plainly states, “I don’t want to be self-sufficient.”
Angie changed the rules and is treating everyone to dinner—including dessert! The kids, who usually eat organic food, were amazed when milkshakes arrived. Her next rule is that Tanner has to take her out for a night on the town, which the kids think isn’t fair. She jokes that Tanner doesn’t even have hair to let down! But their trip to a local bar reminded them all of the fun things their town actually has to offer.
The episode was starting to feel slow until Mary M. Cosby unexpectedly arrived at Angie’s house, which was a huge relief! Finally, something interesting was happening. The best moment was when Mary walked in on Lindsay gutting a fish with Shawn and Elektra – her confused question, “Is she skinning a chicken?” was hilarious. Honestly, her reaction to the fish, and her dislike of the “placenta,” was the funniest thing I’ve seen on TV in a long time.
Their night sleeping in the backyard was a bust – Shawn and Elektra left, and even Lindsay wasn’t enjoying it. The next day, they decided to build a garden to grow their own vegetables. However, I doubt this will last once Angie returns, unless they’re planning to grow grape leaves!
As they were leaving, Angie gave the Flake children a uniquely thoughtful going-away present – sunglasses decorated with the Greek flag – and became visibly emotional as she reflected on the experience. She shared that she realized there isn’t one single ‘right’ way to approach things, and that everything that happened made her rethink her views on beauty and possessions.
Back in Salt Lake City, she finally met Lindsay, and they discussed their experiences, much like on the original Wife Swap. Angie admitted she initially felt sorry for Lindsay’s family, but quickly realized they actually had a lot going for them. Lindsay, in turn, discovered that life with Angie wasn’t the relaxing break she’d expected, due to the constant chores and pressure of being filmed. What I find most fascinating, and the show doesn’t really explore, is how a typical mom has to adapt to the demands of being a reality TV personality. It would be compelling to see a participant deal with dramatic moments – like throwing a drink, filming personalized videos, or even facing legal trouble. Ideally, someone swapping with Melissa Gorga should be forced to start a major rumor about Teresa! At the very least, it would be interesting if a participant acknowledged how strange it is to be filmed for a reality show compared to their everyday life. While the contrast between different lifestyles is always entertaining, the show could be much more compelling if it delved deeper into the reality of being on reality TV.
