Be warned: This article contains major spoilers for the movie Wicked: For Good. Screenwriter Dana Fox discusses a key change made to Glinda’s (Ariana Grande-Butera) storyline at the end of the film. Fox co-wrote the Wicked and For Good screenplays alongside Winnie Holzman, adapting the popular Broadway musical.
The movie Wicked: For Good ends with Glinda successfully opening the Grimmerie, a powerful book of spells. This is different from the original stage musical, where Glinda never demonstrates any magical ability, let alone the power to open the Grimmerie.
In an interview with Deadline, Ariana Fox discussed a key moment in the film: Glinda admitting to Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) that she can’t decipher the Grimmerie. Fox points out this admission is particularly impactful given the earlier flashback showing Glinda’s childhood, and believes it’s why Glinda is ultimately able to open the book. However, she also notes the ending is intentionally ambiguous, suggesting it’s possible Elphaba is actually opening the book for Glinda, even from a distance. You can read Fox’s full comments below.
What really gets me is when Elphaba gives Glinda the Grimmerie, and Glinda admits she can’t read it. That moment feels like her biggest regret. In the movie, we showed her as a child, highlighting her longing for magic and the original hurt she carries. This makes it so difficult for her to confess she can’t access that kind of power. I think her admitting that’s why she ultimately deserves to be able to open the Grimmerie at the end – something that doesn’t happen in the stage version.
My co-writer and I really want the audience to be able to interpret our work in their own way. We love that people connect with the movies and come up with their own meanings. The ending, with Elphaba’s ambiguous smile, is meant to be open to interpretation – did she understand what was happening? Did she feel it? We want each viewer to decide what that moment means to them personally. Honestly, just thinking about it gives me goosebumps – it’s a really powerful ending.
The movie Wicked: For Good takes some liberties with the original story, including a flashback to Glinda’s childhood. This scene shows that Glinda has always loved putting on a show, but it also reveals her lifelong longing for magical abilities. Unable to perform magic herself, she’s spent years hiding her disappointment by appearing confident and accomplished.
According to Fox, Glinda unlocks genuine magical ability when she honestly acknowledges this to both herself and Elphaba. The earlier events in the movie build towards this moment, culminating in Glinda opening the Grimmerie and fully becoming her true self.
Although this is how one of the movie’s writers sees the ending, she stresses it’s not the only valid interpretation. It’s equally possible to see Elphaba using her powers to open the book for her friend – a final, meaningful gesture in their close bond.
The film Wicked: For Good successfully brings the popular Broadway musical to the screen, finishing the stories of Elphaba and Glinda. Plans are already underway to expand the Wicked world with another movie. If made, this sequel could explore Glinda’s magic and her link to the mysterious Grimmerie in more detail.
