Be warned, this article reveals details about the movie Wicked: For Good. Dana Fox, the co-writer of both Wicked films (along with Winnie Holzman, who wrote the original stage musical), is discussing the potential for future movies – including sequels and prequels – following the success of the first two films. While Fox has worked on other popular movies like What Happens in Vegas, How to Be Single, Cruella, and The Lost City, the Wicked films are her most significant projects to date. The first Wicked movie earned $758 million worldwide and received ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and For Good is expected to be a major hit in 2025.
In an interview with Deadline, Cynthia Erivo was asked about the possibility of a third Wicked movie. While there’s been no official announcement about a third film, Erivo expressed her enthusiasm, saying she’d be thrilled to be involved. However, she also feels content with the story being told across two films, explaining that sometimes it’s best to leave something beautiful untouched. She did share some ideas, though, about what she and her children would like to see in a potential Wicked sequel.
I think the characters are so well-loved that seeing what they’ve been doing is really compelling. The moment Elphaba says, ‘I know she can never know that we’re alive,’ really stood out to me – it felt like a setup for them to be discovered eventually. That felt exciting! I’d love to see them again someday. My daughter actually wants a prequel, and I tend to listen to my kids, so I’m all for it. But honestly, I’d be thrilled to be involved in any future projects related to them.
Will Universal Pictures Turn ‘Wicked’ Into a Franchise?

Universal Pictures
Both Wicked and Wicked: For Good are based on the popular musical, with the first film covering Act I and the second covering Act II. While there are no more acts of the stage play to adapt, there’s still plenty of source material available. The musical itself was originally inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire continued the story with a series of books, including Son of a Witch (2005), A Lion Among Men (2008), and Out of Oz (2011). He also wrote Tales Told in Oz in 2012, which delves into Oz’s history and includes a prequel focusing on Elphaba’s childhood, Elphie: A Wicked Childhood, published in 2025.
As a huge fan of Wicked, I’m really hoping Universal turns it into a franchise, and I think they absolutely could! With Colman Domingo as the Cowardly Lion, it feels like a perfect opening to adapt A Lion Among Men. But it’s tricky because the stage show already changed a lot from the original book, and those changes don’t really fit with where the sequel books go – especially Son of a Witch, which focuses on Elphaba and Fiyero’s son, Liir. Plus, any future Wicked movies would need completely new songs, since they’d be based directly on the books. Following up one of the most beloved musicals ever with original music is a seriously tough challenge!
As a huge movie fan, the idea of Universal turning Wicked into a whole franchise definitely seems appealing to the studio. They even considered calling the second movie Wicked: For Good, which felt like a signal they were thinking long-term, potentially adding ‘Wicked’ to the titles of future films, similar to what they did with The Twilight Saga or The Hunger Games. But honestly, I’m wondering if audiences are truly captivated by this new spin on The Wizard of Oz, or if what’s really driving the excitement is the amazing music from the Broadway show and, of course, seeing Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande bring Elphaba and Glinda to life on the big screen.
