Wicked: For Good Deleted A Major Fiyero & Glinda Scene That Complicated The Love Triangle

Be warned: This article reveals key plot points from the upcoming movie, Wicked: For Good. A central part of the film involves a complicated romantic relationship between Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo), Glinda (Ariana Grande), and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). One of the movie’s writers has shared that a scene which didn’t make the final cut would have added even more layers to this dynamic. However, at its heart, Wicked is a story about the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda and the challenges it faces.

In Wicked: For Good, the conflict between the witches of Oz isn’t just about politics – it’s also fueled by their shared attraction to Fiyero, a prince they both knew when they were students at Shiz University. Like in the original Broadway musical, Fiyero enters Shiz later than everyone else and quickly becomes involved with Glinda.

Their connection starts because they’re both considered the most popular and seemingly flawless students at school. As Fiyero gets to know Elphaba, he realizes he’s not truly happy with his life. Even though Fiyero is dealing with this internal struggle, he initially stays with Glinda while Elphaba is forced to flee, but he ultimately joins her in leaving the Emerald City.

As a huge fan of the movie, I was surprised to learn from Dana Fox, one of the writers, that they actually filmed a romantic scene with a kiss between Fiyero and Glinda for the sequel! Apparently, they ended up cutting it because they worried it wouldn’t make sense for Fiyero to leave Glinda if it seemed like he was truly in love with her. It’s a shame, but I can understand their thinking – they wanted his choices to feel believable.

Check out Fox’s comments below:

We removed a romantic kissing scene between Fiyero and Glinda because it felt too intense. It made Fiyero’s decision to be with Elphaba less believable and Elphaba running away with him harder to accept. The scene showed a genuine connection between Fiyero and Glinda that felt too strong.

He definitely cares about Glinda, but his feelings are different than romantic love. The scene felt too sweet and risked making the audience upset if he didn’t end up with her. It could have led to viewers disliking all three characters – Elphaba, Glinda, and Fiyero – so cutting it was probably the right decision. It was just too adorable to leave in, knowing how things would ultimately play out.

Some viewers felt a particular scene could have explained why Fiyero remained with Glinda and agreed to marry her. However, producer Jenna Fox insists she doesn’t regret removing it, believing all cuts were made for good reasons. She also isn’t sure if the scene, or any other deleted footage, will ever be released.

The scene almost caused issues because it initially seemed to portray a genuine romance between Fiyero and Glinda, rather than showing Fiyero’s misguided attempts to care for her. Ultimately, the filmmakers removed it to ensure all the main characters remained sympathetic to the audience, which is why the final movie version looks the way it does.

The musical Wicked always had a complex love story where someone was bound to be heartbroken, and the new movie, Wicked: For Good, explores how the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda survives the challenges. Directed by Jon M. Chu and featuring Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, and Bronwyn James, Wicked: For Good is currently playing in theaters.
