The second part of the popular musical *Wicked* comes out in theaters next month. Director Jon M. Chu has revealed who will play the Cowardly Lion after building anticipation for the casting announcement.
Colman Domingo, a two-time Oscar nominee, will play the Cowardly Lion in the upcoming *Wicked* movie. The film’s official Instagram account confirmed the casting on October 20th. Domingo has received recent Oscar nominations for his work in *Rustin* and *Sing Sing* (in 2023 and 2024, respectively), and he won an Emmy Award in 2022 for his guest appearance on *Euphoria*.
Okay, so the big reveal of who’s playing the Cowardly Lion in the *Wizard of Oz* sequel was seriously clever! Director Chu posted a video of Domingo literally hiding behind a giant stuffed lion before popping out and announcing, “See you in Oz!” He then hinted that we’d all be shocked when the actor behind the iconic voice finally walked the red carpet. Honestly, the speculation was *insane* – everyone from Lin-Manuel Miranda to Timothée Chalamet and Liam Neeson were fan favorites for the role, but ultimately, Domingo landed the part. It’s going to be a fun reveal when he finally appears!
In the musical *Wicked*, the Cowardly Lion is portrayed as a young cub who is saved by Elphaba and Fiyero after a professor brings a caged lion to school. The professor claims the cub won’t be able to learn to speak while imprisoned, which upsets Elphaba. Using her magic, she and Fiyero free the cub and release him into the forest. Later, in the movie sequel, this lion has grown up and holds Elphaba responsible for the path his life took.
The Cowardly Lion is All Grown Up in the Sequel
Because the story of *Wicked: For Good* takes place around the same time as *The Wizard of Oz*, viewers will see familiar characters like the Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow traveling down the Yellow Brick Road to meet the Wizard (played by Jeff Goldblum). The movie will focus on the events of the second half of the *Wicked* musical, showing how the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda falls apart as they become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, respectively.
Besides appearing in *Wicked: For Good* with Glen Powell, releasing November 7th, he will also play Bobby Thompson, the host of the *Running Man* TV show in the film.
Wicked: For Good will hit theaters on Nov. 21.
