A major mystery heading into the final season of Stranger Things is why Vecna specifically targeted Will Byers back in Season 1. Vecna could have chosen any of the kids in Hawkins, but he went after one of the most sensitive and compassionate – Will – and subjected him to torment in the Upside Down. Interestingly, Will wasn’t the only child out late that night; Lucas and Dustin were also walking home. This raises the question: what made Will unique and a target for Vecna?
Season 5 of Stranger Things started giving us some answers about Will and Vecna’s connection in episode 4, “Sorcerer,” but honestly, it felt like just half the story. Their reunion definitely shed some light on why they’re linked, but a lot remains unexplained, and I suspect we’ll get the full picture when the final episodes drop. The show is heavily hinting that Will’s disappearance wasn’t random; there’s something truly unique about him, something that makes him central to everything. And honestly, a pretty out-there theory is gaining traction – one that suggests Eleven might be the key to understanding Will’s trauma. It’s a bold idea, and I’m eager to see if the Duffer Brothers go there.
Why Did Vecna Choose Will in Season 1?
In Season 5, Episode 4, Vecna disrupts the group’s plan to save the children he’d been targeting, intending to take them away from Hawkins to protect them. He unleashes demogorgons, causing chaos and attacking both the military at the Hawkins base and anyone trying to help the children, all to cover his escape through the open portal. Vecna reveals he specifically chose children because he believes their minds and bodies are easily manipulated. He explains that Will, in particular, demonstrated the qualities of a perfect vessel, highlighting Will’s sensitivity and feelings of isolation as proof that he was meant for Vecna’s world.
Vecna specifically mentioned Will’s vulnerability and how well children fit his plans, hinting that Will has been a vessel for him all along. Given Will’s history as a host for the Mind Flayer and his ability to sense and control demogorgons, it’s possible he’s been unknowingly helping Vecna gain power for some time.
Similar to how Dr. Brenner gave others psychic powers, Henry is now doing the same to Will and other children, but for his own purposes. He sees it as payback for the mistreatment he experienced as a child. This explains why Vecna tells Will in a flashback at the beginning of Season 5: “We are going to do such beautiful things together, William.”
Vecna thinks he can convince Will to join him because they have a lot in common from their childhoods. Both were quiet, creative, and felt like they didn’t quite fit in. Will might have been specifically targeted because he reminded Vecna of himself when he was younger. However, that would mean Vecna had to secretly observe Will for several months to really understand him. Interestingly, Vecna never appeared to Will as a secret friend like he did with Holly and Derek. It’s also possible that another person brought Vecna and Will together.
Did Eleven Lead Vecna to Will by Accident?
Fans of Stranger Things have been discussing whether Vecna truly found Will by chance, or if someone deliberately led him there. The Duffer Brothers recently confirmed this wasn’t a random encounter, meaning the creature that entered the Byers’ home in the first episode wasn’t the Demogorgon – it was someone with telepathic abilities. Currently, only Eleven and Vecna are known to possess such powers within the world of Stranger Things.
As a huge fan, I’ve been diving into theories about what really happened at the beginning of Stranger Things. One idea suggests that Eleven accidentally opened the gate when she fled Hawkins Lab. She was probably just trying to find somewhere safe, but maybe she sensed the Demogorgon and panicked. However, there’s a darker theory that’s really stuck with me: that she unknowingly led the Demogorgon to Will, almost as if she was meant to be Vecna’s first target. It’s tough to imagine Eleven doing something so awful, considering how she felt like a monster herself in Season 1, but it does connect with Vecna later admitting she ‘opened the door’ for him. It’s a chilling thought, but it definitely makes you look at everything differently!
It would be a shocking twist if Eleven unintentionally played a role in Vecna capturing Will, essentially saving her own life in the process. This could mean Will was chosen simply because he was nearby and looked somewhat like Eleven – a witness even pointed this out in Season 1, saying Will could have been Eleven with a shaved head. This connection might become important in Season 5, leading to a surprising reveal.
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is available to watch on Netflix now. The second part will be released on December 25th, and the very last episodes of the series will premiere on December 31st.
